UC Berkeley Student plan field trip to Sudo Room, ask for hackers to give them 'real' education

by Max Klein

Hell Holy Kopimists and Sudoers, A group of self-organized students from UC Berkeley want to Visit Sudo Room on October 14th 5pm to take theory into praxis. Their student-run class is "Politics of Digital Piracy" . https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Education_Program:University_of_California,_B… They are asking if someone would like to take point on peer-teaching one of the following topics to the insatiable and impressionable minds of the hackcers-to-be. As far as volunteers go, I think if would be cool if someone: > a.) did a hands-on workshop setting up Thunderbird, enigmail, and explain > a bit about encryption/decryption, pgp and private keys ect. > > b.) setting up tor. Gratutiously yours, Max ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Angelica Tavella <angelicatavella(a)gmail.com> Date: 30 September 2013 08:32 Subject: Re: September updates To: Max Klein <isalix(a)gmail.com> Cc: Matthew Senate <mattsenate(a)gmail.com> Great. So here is a link to the class wiki page (yes, we're still using your implementation of the WMF Education Program). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Education_Program:University_of_California,_B… The topics we have covered so far are copyright law, privacy and surveillance, hack culture, and are moving on to peer to peer networks this week. The week of Oct 14 (the proposed evening), we will just be presenting midterm projects, so I think the learning objective of our trip to sudoroom could be related to any of our covered topics so far. As far as volunteers go, I think if would be cool if someone: a.) did a hands-on workshop setting up Thunderbird, enigmail, and explain a bit about encryption/decryption, pgp and private keys ect. b.) setting up tor. Despite its recent cracks, there have been students that have expressed interest in using Tor. c.) talk about the hack culture, and what kind of things sudoroom does. Let me know if you think this is doable. Should be fun. Also, bringing a group from the Open Computing Facility as well. -Ang

Re: [sudo-discuss] Fwd: The Omni

by Liberty Madison

I am hoping we continue to occupy the current location under more favorable terms. The access to not only BART, but city government, assemblies, events, community is appealing. Sent from my Samsung Galaxy Note™, an AT&T LTE smartphone -------- Original message -------- Subject: Re: [sudo-discuss] Fwd: The Omni From: David Keenan <dkeenan44(a)gmail.com> To: "sudo-discuss(a)lists.sudoroom.org" <sudo-discuss(a)lists.sudoroom.org> CC: Re: [sudo-discuss] Fwd: The Omni Thanks Eddan for clarifying. Im sad i missed the joint meeting with CCL re: moving in - we definitely need more meatspace strategizing on making a 3-way move like that happen - I'm really happy that marina and y'all are checking out the Omni and other potential spaces - I'm going to start looking pretty hard and get BAPSers in on this too - sounds like a guesstimated combo sudo/baps/ccl monthly budget would be ~$4500, does that seem about right? Re: SUDO moving into the Omni, it sounds super cool and personally I have no problem with the location - but I do think if there are ppl living in the space, that might make it challenging - conversely if there are lots of loud shows there, that might make having a class tough? And more or less importantly.. are there windows in the Omni space? It's be great if whatever space SUDO moved to had more natural light.. On Monday, September 30, 2013, Eddan Katz wrote: Terminating the current lease means the latter, David. That is - at that point, a new/better lease can be negotiated. Or not, if so decided. While the details on what a co-op purchase would look like still have to be hammered out in detail, it was my understanding from George that he was interested in an arrangement that would include selling off equity in that portion. Different organizations would put up money in their collective shares and that wing would be organized as a co-op with the different organizational/individual owners taking part in the decision-making of managing the building. On Sep 30, 2013, at 12:05 PM, David Keenan wrote: Hey guys, Regarding leaving 2141 and scoping out new spaces.. I was hoping someone could fill me in on what is really meant by deciding we are officially 'terminating the lease' in Dec. ? Does it mean we are definitely out of 2141 come Jan., ie, we definitely dont want to stay at 2141? Has that been decided? Or, would we have the opportunity to negotiate a new/better lease if we did decide to keep on at 2141? Re: a co-op purchase of part of 2141, what are the brass tacks of that exactly? I..e, do we have however many tens of thousands I imagine we would need for most mortgage downpayments? Is there some angel investor here I dunno about? Along the same lines what are our real-world options with respect buying the church, or part of the Omni? Or are we just talking about renting part of the omni? Personally, I'd prefer to move, but move with BAPS, SUDO, and CCL. It kind of seems like maybe we should find a good place to move to, and understand what our combined budget is. if SUDO moves out without BAPS that would suck for BAPS and also mean that SUDO would probably get a smaller space than we would get if we combined forces, synchronized, and all moved somewhere together (or mayber stayed at 2141 together, under more amenable conditions). Staying together being the operative word to me here.. Best. If Sudo room moves up to the Berkeley Border, it would make sense to join with Ace Monster Toys. Also, in my opinion that is way too far from Bart, and way too far from where I live, so I would probably not ever go there. Sounds like an interesting space though, and that is a better neighborhood than where AMT is now. Maybe they would be interested in this space? Tracy It's 1.4 mi away, which is relatively close, though not a super convenient walking distance. However they are looking for bigger cheaper spaces (minimum 3000 sq ft, and at most $1/sqft), so I'm not sure this would work. Also they have a requirement that anything over 2500sqft MUST have overhead sprinklers. That combined with the noise constraints might be an issue, since AMT has lots of big noisy toys (large CNC router tables, laser cutters, power saws, etc) _______________________________________________ sudo-discuss mailing list sudo-discuss(a)lists.sudoroom.org

Hi! I'm new to Oakland/SudoRoom, so this may be the completely wrong place to ask this... but can anyone recommend a good electrician to run phone cables? Ideally one who is available on the weekends? Zee

Re: [sudo-discuss] [spaghettinight] Buying Greater Galilee Church in West Oakland - Viewing Tuesday 8pm

by Morten H. D. Fuglsang

Yes, the building itself is certainly not worth a lot/if anything. It was built by one of the founders of that specific church, some 4-7 decades ago. One of the churchgoers' fathers I believe. But hey! with some creativity, skill and hard work anything is possible, and building new dwelling(s) doesn't necessarily have to be a 2 year project. Might even be possible to get for less than 400k. Make a great day, Morten H. D.
