Hi Sudo folk. I wanted to both advertise and solicit help with a project I've been working on called Network of Trust (http://networkoftrust.net/). The idea is that the best way to choose who to hire for different services is based on recommendations and advice from your friends and family. Speaking of which, this is a project I've been working on with my dad. Who has been known to lurk on this list. Since I've never had the opportunity to introduce my dad, I'm going to try and use as much Internet jargon as I can for him to look up. Please bear with me. My father, Michael, is a true geek at heart. He went to the Technion Institute in Haifa, Israel to study engineering "back in the olden days" as his grand-daughter likes to say. He later got his business degree at NYU and worked at a company called Celesco, which made transducers, for most of his career. He retired sometime about last year - and Network of Trust is one of things he spends his time on. He's kind of like Robert de Niro from Meet the Parents. So I think what we need the most help with is some eyeballs on how the back-end is put together, since the guy who did it is working on other things now. Also, as always, need people to sign up and to use it. Comments and suggestions would be very much appreciated. OK, dad, don't be shy. These are nice people. Mostly. -Eddan

must read guardian leaks on tor

by Praveen Sinha

In case you haven't seen the news today, here's the summary and analysis from Bruce Schneier good to send to your non-tech friends): http://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/oct/04/tor-attacks-nsa-users-online-a… And the leaked doc itself straight from GCHQ for straight up infosec nerds: http://www.theguardian.com/world/interactive/2013/oct/04/tor-stinks-nsa-pre… Fascinating to see their capabilities and limitations. Open question: What does everyone think the next generation architecture/next versions of TOR should have given all of this?

Young people released from the Alameda County Juvenile Justice Center (ACJJC) and from schools in the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) will now have the unique opportunity to receive in-depth mindfulness training, tutoring in basic mentoring skills, and education in the mental and behavioral health fields, broadly defined. The program’s inspiration is drawn from a young man who recently contacted MBA once released from the ACJJC, looking to deepen his practice and skills learned while incarcerated. Executive Director Sam Himelstein donated $400 to underwrite this first internship. Will you underwrite the next one? Our interns will receive a $400 stipend for approximately 50 hours of internship over the course of a semester. The East Bay Asian Youth Center (EBAYC), MBA’s partner at Dewey Academy (one of our OUSD sites), has generously awarded funding for 3 additional MBA interns from Dewey Academy. MBA hopes to build a cohort of a minimum of 8 interns for the 2013-2014 school year. We already have four spots funded; donate today to fund the other four interns! > > One Daylong Training Remaining - Sign Up Today > > "Mindfulness-Based Substance Abuse Treatment for High-Risk Adolescents", Sunday October 13, 2013 > Only one more daylong training left to go this Fall, so don’t sleep on it! “Mindfulness-Based Substance Abuse Treatment for High-Risk Adolescents” is a must for any teacher, clinician, or mentor who works with young people who use drugs and for anyone interested in applying mindfulness philosophy and techniques to help deal with substance use. In this training you’ll learn the underlying principles of using a mindfulness-based model to work with young people, actual group curriculum activities that you can use with the young people you work with, and how to effectively apply mindfulness to this field. Continuing Education (CE) is available. Click here to sign up today! > > About the Trainer: > The training will be facilitated by Sam Himelstein, Ph.D., Executive Director of the MBA Project and licensed psychologist (PSY25229). Sam has worked with high-risk and incarcerated youth in his multiple roles with MBA over the years and with several other organizations for over a decade. His passion for this work has been encapsulated in his just released book, “A Mindfulness-Based Approach to Working With High-Risk Adolescents.” > > > > > Join us for Sam Himelstein's Upcoming Book Talk > > Sofia University, November 14, 2013 > > In April of 2013, MBA’s Executive Director Sam published his first book, “A Mindfulness-Based Approach to Working with High-Risk Adolescents” (Routledge, 2013). On November 14, 2013 (6-7pm), Sam will review the major concepts in his book and field questions from the audience. He will also, of course, highlight the latest programs and accomplishments of MBA. Join us at Sofia University in Palo Alto, CA in the “Great Sophia” classroom, right next to the library at Sofia University: 1069 E. Meadow Circle, Palo Alto, CA 94303. No registration required, just show up! Refreshments will be served. Your chance to get Sam’s book at a 20% discount. > > > Sponsor an MBA Youth Retreatant Today: Only $250 Per Youth > > > > Last summer MBA offered its first multiday residential mindfulness retreat deep in the old-growth redwood forests of Pescadero, CA to 10 youth. MBA is in the process of planning its second set of summer retreats for 2014, but we can’t do it without you. Help us double, or even triple the size of the retreat so more youth can benefit from this comprehensive program that offers skills for emotion management, stress reduction, and nature appreciation for urban youth that rarely, if ever, get access to the great outdoors. As usual, MBA does not charge youth or their families for any of our programming. Your ongoing support ensures MBA youth access to an eco-system of life-changing support. Remember, our youth come from low-income neighborhoods and deal with issues of violence, substance abuse, and trauma. $250 sends one youth on retreat. Help us meet our goal of sending 20-30 youth this summer. Flux capacitor

by Eddan Katz

I was wondering if any Sudo-imagineers knew anything about Flux Capacitors (http://backtothefuture.wikia.com/wiki/Flux_capacitor). I want to see if I can go back in time and change the wording of a recent email I wrote and have been told that a flux capacitor would be necessary to accomplish this.

Handheld 3D printing extruder

by Hol Gaskill

I'm going to try my hand at making one of these. ABS filament arrives next week to begin torturing me for the 1.5 month until the hot end itself arrives. Thinking wooden handle with a 3D printed trigger mounted to a spring-loaded potentiometer. Tricky part will be setting up the controller to compensate for different feed rates. the fun part will be holding contests to see who can draw the best cylinder. anyone interested in this or have tips from 3D printer builds? cheers, hol

Fwd: The Omni

by Marina Kukso

hey all, max, rabbit, and i ended up being at the omni at the same time yesterday. what is the omni? read more below! ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Max Klein <isalix(a)gmail.com> Date: Sat, Sep 28, 2013 at 7:39 PM Subject: The Omni To: "marina.kukso" <marina.kukso(a)gmail.com>, Rabbit Whiskers < rabbitface(a)gmail.com> ==What is the Omni== *4799 Shattuck Avenue *Officially zoned as a house *Complex with many rooms and their loose plans for them **Ballroom hall - Yoga and other type of classes **A Bar/Restaurant Room - A "transactional cafe" **A workshop type area - artist subdivisions in half, maybe a hackerspace. **Bedroom type area - Where they will live ***A Basement - Coworking area, a film studio, and a VR Lab with omni-treadmills **A Commercial Kitchen - foodtrepreneurs-space ==Who are the Omni== *Six core people **Hippie/Burner/20-30something **Ben Olmstead (sp?) ("chief architect") we met with him *Leasing to Buy **Total price $2m ==Sudo Room at the Omni== *There is place that is good for a hackspace *[insert picture here] ====>>>>> http://oaklandwiki.org/The_Omni *They want to make 10 artist cubicles 10'x10' and charge $4/sqft. *Half the room will still be avavilable, and could be Sudo's for approx $2k/month. **They want to make $8k/month from the artist spaces + workshop + coworking + movie studio + VRLAB + kitchen, so any combination works for them. We can offer creative solutions. For instance I suggested: *Pay upfront for a year could be cheaper, because they would have a larger downpayment on their loan. They accepted. *It is 10 minutes walk from McArthur BART **Is that too far?
