Hey,
The FCC's Net Neutrality proposal just leaked, and it's terrible. Four
million people spoke out against "slow lanes" and cable company
censorship, and the FCC's rules explicitly open the door for that kind
of abuse. From what we're hearing, they're finalizing the rules right
now. We can still stop this, but we have to act swiftly and show a
strong response right away.
[1]Find out about Thursday's emergency protest in San Francisco. Sign up
and spread the word!
Here's the plan: we need to send a strong message to President Obama and
the FCC right now that the Internet using public won't just roll over
and let them take our rights away. So, taking some inspiration from mass
protests in Hungary that just defeated an unfair Internet Tax there,
we'll gather after dark at the White House and government buildings
nationwide and hold up our glowing cell phones, laptops, tablets, to
shine light on the corruption unfolding in Washington, DC that threatens
our most basic freedoms.
Will you join us on Thursday in front of the Civic Center Plaza in San
Francisco, CA? If you can't make it, can you spread the word?
[2]Yes, I'll share or go to the action in San Francisco on Thursday!
The battle for the net is coming to head. Everything you can do right now
matters more than you know. Here are the details for the event, please
spread the word:
What: Vigil in San Francisco for the open Internet
When: November 6th, 6pm PST
Where: Civic Center Plaza, San Francisco, CA
355 Mcallister St, San Francisco, California 94102
Bring your cell phone, flashlight, or candle!
See you there,
Demand Progress

secrets
It's been almost 17 months since we read the first of Edward Snowden's
leaks and not everything on the Internet is encrypted yet. Let's get
together a fortnight hence and fix that. Learn crypto tools and teach
your friends and classmates and colleagues.
When
Thursday, November 13th, 2013; 5:30pm (and going until TT)
Where
210 South Hall
Everyone can and should bring her own expertise, but we'll at least go
over encryption tools for email (PGP and Keybase) and Web browsing
(HTTPS and TOR) and use of encryption in protests. Add to the wiki (or
let me know via email) if there's a tool or mini-talk you'd like to present.

Hi All,
Found a flyer for this at Scarlett City coffee, and sounded interesting.
As an intro, my name is Trav, I'm a designer/developer in Emeryville. I
do front-end work currently, although have done server-side stuff in the
past.
I'll just be lurking for a bit to find out what goes on here, but I
thought I'd note that for the last several days when you navigate to
peoplesopen.net, you get a certificate error. You may want to either
update your cert, or not auto-redirect to https (which may be better if
you don't really need an encrypted connection for most of the content.)
Hope that makes sense, happy to provide more info (and sorry if this is
off-topic for this list).
Trav

MtP!
hey all,
I'd like to implement a connection to the 5ghz node sitting on top of the
7-story building at Laney College.
We've got some 5ghz antennas:
http://www.l-com.com/wireless-antenna-49-58-ghz-27-dbi-lightweight-die-cast…
I believe we do have some 5ghz Ubiquiti Nanostations, but as far as I'm
aware we would have to hack them to work with the directional antennas we
have around. Sub-ideal.
Looking for a cheap alternative, I'm thinking about buying one or two of
these Ubiquiti Bullet5 routers:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/UbiQuiti-Bullet5-5GHz-802-11a-100mW-outdoor-wireles…
Does anyone recommend an alternative device?
Also, let me know if you want to participate!
