Hey folks, My friend is leasing a place in Richmond and I'd like to help set up some internet connections at their place. I recall it might be handy to have some stable spots in this area, and I think this might be a good location. Let me know if you'd like to talk more about good options. I haven't been available for usual mesh times lately, but I think I can meet up with specific folks to talk details at other times. I plan to be at sudo tomorrow night, weds. Cheers, Matt

coucou

by keoma

Coucou, TL;DR: Help? After setting a N600 router following the wiki page, I am able to connect my router using WiFi (using the private access point) but I can't ping any device other than the ones connected to my router. I don't know what to do now. Is there any troubleshoot page ? To reproduce: 1. Follow the guide (well written!) 2. Pain Thanks, Keo

Red Cross + HAM Radio: American Red Cross Asks ARRL’s Assistance with Puerto Rico Relief Effort

by Jorrit Poelen

from http://www.arrl.org/news/american-red-cross-asks-arrl-s-assistance -with-puerto-rico-relief-effort - "The American Red Cross (ARC) has asked the ARRL for assistance with relief efforts in Puerto Rico. ARC needs up to 50 radio amateurs who can help record, enter, and submit disaster-survivor information into the ARC Safe and Well system. In the nearly 75-year relationship between ARRL and ARC, this is the first time such a request for assistance on this scale has been made. ARRL now is looking for radio amateurs who can step up and volunteer to help our friends in Puerto Rico." Perhaps a source of inspiration for disaster communication scenarios. -jorrit

almost, one more node

by Radamés Ajna

Hi All, Thanks for the introduction to the peoplesopen.net on Saturday at the Omni Commons BYOI I've got one router and successfully flash the firmware, all good. Unfortunately I couldn't yet find any close signal around my place, still need to climb on the roof and point to some possible directions. I'll try to buy the small antenna someone show me on the event. I'm sorry I can't remember your names. I'd be interested in patch my firmware, as I've heard that there is potential bug that can make the node use my internet instead of the VPN. I've tested the firmware connecting the router to my ISP, got two peoplesopen open networks and my private secure network, also could successfully access the internet through the VPN. A practical question, do you have plans to put a captive portal, splash screen explaining the free internet access? perhaps some explanations on privacy, security, liability? I'm happy to share free internet to my surrounds, but would be great to share what's going on. Another few questions, Has anybody found a way to connect raspberry pis ad-hoc mode onto the peoplesopen? do I need two wifi USB devices? or the RPIs has already dual band? I'm very interested in the potential to add RPIs nodes to this existing mesh network. I came across this https://nycmesh.net/meshberry/ And finally are the ESPs compatible with the mesh? can the ESPs talk to the peoplesopen and also to others ESPs, this looks very interesting https://github.com/sudomesh/disaster-radio Thanks ps. I think would be better come to one of your sessions to discuss those topics, right? Radamés twitter.com/radamar

Fwd: wireless mesh network nodes

Bourbon" <bb(a)elleko.net> To: shenm(a)bsc.coop, shehp(a)bsc.coop, davnm(a)bsc.coop, davhp(a)bsc.coop, nm(a)bsc.coop Hi- l got your contact information from visiting Sherman Hall & Davis House today. l work with a community wireless mesh network based in north Oakland called Peoplesopen Network. There are hate speakers invited on campus by the UCB administration expected in the next week. l and some other folks want to set up a mesh that covers campus (esp. the vicinity of Sproul Plaza) during the anticipated events to provide internet connectivity. The CalVisitor network has terrible coverage as is, and it has been observed that the school stops service during some events. Supplementing existing wireless infrastructure in events like these is exactly why community mesh networks exist. It significantly increases safety for everyone in the area. l write to ask you guys for help with setting up a node (or more) that will provide bandwidth. The node(s) need(s) not be permanent, (but we'd be happy to maintain them, love them and make them part of the existing project if they were.) We plan to have sneakernet nodes (humans carrying nodes) bounce the signal to where service is required as the events progress. We also have access to a great line of sight roof right across the street from Davis and Sherman (which cannot provide bandwidth). Your involvement will help a lot. l plan on visiting Ridge Hall today. l hope you can help! -BB (415)680-3738 -- -BB
