Fwd: The new "Who Has Your Back?" report is out!

by Eddan Katz

We should invite Marcia and the EFF folks out to publicize this important corporate socially responsible technology report launch. Any interest? sent from eddan.com Begin forwarded message: > From: "Marcia Hoffman | EFF" <membership(a)eff.org> > Date: April 30, 2013, 12:16:09 PM PDT > To: Eddan Katz <eddank(a)aya.yale.edu> > Subject: The new "Who Has Your Back?" report is out! > Reply-To: "Marcia Hoffman | EFF" <membership(a)eff.org> > > > This is a friendly message from the Electronic Frontier Foundation. View it in a web browser. > > > Dear Eddan, > I'm excited to announce the latest update to our annual Who Has Your Back? privacy report! > > When you use the Internet, companies ask you to trust them with your private data: from personal messages, to search terms, to photos, and much more. But government officials increasingly ask companies to hand that data over, a fact highlighted by the recent battle over CISPA. > > To make Who Has Your Back?, EFF lawyers and activists review company policies and interview legal departments to find out exactly how companies deal with government requests for your data. We review their answers and give stars to companies with industry-leading policies and practices, which helps privacy-conscious users make informed decisions and encourages the companies to step it up. > > But the real power behind Who Has Your Back? comes from you. EFF's strong and principled community pushes companies to take privacy seriously, and after three years, we're proud to report that even more companies have moved towards instituting best practices when it comes to standing up for users’ privacy from the government. > > We’re proud to be fighting for users’ rights, made possible by donations from individuals like you. Please consider supporting projects like Who Has Your Back? by joining EFF today! > > > > Thank you, > > Marcia Hoffman > EFF Senior Staff Attorney > > > Electronic Frontier Foundation, 815 Eddy Street, San Francisco, CA 94109 USA > EFF appreciates your support and respects your privacy. > Unsubscribe or change your email preferences.

sudo room withdrawal symptoms

by Romy Ilano

ok, i have been away from sudoroom for a full two nights now i miss sudoroom! we have org nerds that work really hard to keep the projects running. that stuff is hard. it is the only place i've hung out at where there are serious women hackers. that is so rad after all these years you bastards are finally making me consider installing linux on my laptop. not even my ex boyfriend could talk me into it! i like that there is pushback against too many overly commercial projects at sudoroom. it creates a safe space. i do not get this safe feeling at places that are too profit-oriented. it is like eliminating recess at school and leads to burnout people actually consider alternatives to current economics models in a serious way, which I really appreciate even though my views are often different it is a place where people forgive each other there is a hella ton of homemade vegan food at the meetings! that is so cool. we make it too. when i lived in the south bay i felt like my brain was dying. students there did not really go to demonstrations. they did not think that much about politics or economics. it was hard to get them to think much about anything. i'm not sure why this happened but i think it's a structural thing. i'm very lucky to talk to people at sudoroom who are structurally not mentally destroyed and who still think and feel passionate

rPis >$ Thinkpads

by rusty lindgren

Seems obvious, but I don't think people realize how cheap we can get thinkpads... thinkpads also last a long time, using superior electronics components, hinges and other hardware. http://www.extremetech.com/computing/148482-the-true-cost-of-a-raspberry-pi… If anyone wants to know how to buy thinkpads, I'm willing to sit down with people and find them cheap computers for hacking. -- Cheers, Rusty Lindgren **
