Welcoming Committee: Omni's newest working group!

by Jenny Ryan

Hey all! As we prepare to open the Omni officially to the public, there's a clear and pressing need to organize around creating a welcoming and inclusive experience for newcomers and visitors to the project. The Welcoming Committee is nascent and ripe for co-constructing! Some of the ideas for activities include: * Scheduling volunteer shifts for the front door: 10am-2pm, 2pm-6pm, and 6pm-10pm * Monthly orientations to onboard committee members to the collectives, people, projects, events, policies etc they should know about to man the front desk. * Creating documentation (in tandem with the Communications WG) that we can hand out to guests - one-sheeters that make it clear and easy to see how you can volunteer and plug into the project. * Weekly potlucks (in tandem w/ Food Not Bombs Sunday leftovers). * Coordinating and assisting with Omni-wide events to bring in new folks from a diverse array of communities (eg; monthly neighborhood assemblies). The first official meeting will take place *Thursday, December 11th at 6pm in La Commune <https://omnicommons.org/calendar/events/welcoming-committee/>, *but you can join the conversation now by subscribing to the mailing list at https://omnicommons.org/lists/listinfo/welcoming or by adding ideas to our wiki page: https://omnicommons.org/wiki/Welcoming_Committee or by chatting directly with me or David Brazil! <3 Jenny http://jennyryan.net http://thepyre.org http://thevirtualcampfire.org http://technomadic.tumblr.com `~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~` "Technology is the campfire around which we tell our stories." -Laurie Anderson "Storytelling reveals meaning without committing the error of defining it." -Hannah Arendt "To define is to kill. Fwd: [omni-discuss] Gaming Indiegogo for La Commune

by Vicky Knox

Donation swarm on December 1st so La Commune gets mentioned on the front page of Indiegogo! Mark your calendars!!!!!!!!! Donation size does not matter. Message: 1 Date: Wed, 26 Nov 2014 23:42:57 +0000 (UTC) From: DZ Brazil <dzbrazil(a)yahoo.com> To: Discuss Discussion <discuss(a)lists.omnicommons.org > Subject: [omni-discuss] Gaming Indiegogo for La Commune Message-ID: < 1653410191.381094.1417045377151.JavaMail.yahoo(a)jws10717.mail.gq1.yahoo.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8" Dear Friends, Colleagues & Comrades : La Commune's fundraising campaign is going really well. Thanks so much for your support! Oakland's favorite commie bookstore is open Thursday through Sunday, 12-6pm and will be extending those hours soon. We're getting a great response from people in the neighborhood. So gratifying ! And our stock is growing--we're pricing and shelving some really nice books. Please stop by! So here's where we make yet another pitch. This one's pretty painless though: We've been told that a large, um, swarm of contributions on a single day will earn us a mention on the Indiegogo page, and that could lead to more donations. So, if you're willing and able, (mark your calendars now) please make a contribution (can be as little as a dollar) to La Commune on DECEMBER 1st. Everyone who does will get a free cup of house coffee when the cafe opens. Here's the link: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/la-commune-cafe-and-bookstore--2 Thank you! David Brazil (on behalf of La Commune)

Fwd: [Noisebridge-discuss] Safe hackerspaces mailing list

by Torrie Fischer

Hi, sudoers. Noisebridge has been trying to figure out ways to circulate information within the space about folks who come to Noisebridge but are not welcome to stay for strong reasons. Here's our idea: ---------- Forwarded Message ---------- Subject: [Noisebridge-discuss] Safe hackerspaces mailing list Date: Monday, November 24, 2014, 10:44:04 PM From: Patrick O'Doherty <p(a)trickod.com> To: noisebridge-discuss(a)lists.noisebridge.net Hey all, In the interests of collaborating with other hackerspaces on safe space issues myself and Torrie have set up an inter-hackerspace mailing list to share information about folks that are not welcome in spaces as a potential warning to others. The address is safe-hackerspaces(a)lists.riseup.net. You can subscribe at riseup here: https://lists.riseup.net/www/info/safe-hackerspaces The list is *not* intended for interpersonal issues in spaces, rather it's meant for sharing notice of incidents where people have been asked to leave and not return. For this reason the list is moderated. We'd like others outside of Noisebridge to contribute to the moderation group. Happy hacking, P _______________________________________________ Noisebridge-discuss mailing list Noisebridge-discuss(a)lists.noisebridge.net https://www.noisebridge.net/mailman/listinfo/noisebridge-discuss -----------------------------------------

Fwd: Re: [omni-discuss] Strange man sleeping in eyeball room

by Eske Silver

Oops, sorry, I keep forgetting to cc everyone in the thread. Sending this in case not everyone is getting all of the replies. ~ Korl ---------- Forwarded: Okie doke. So. I spoke the alleged permissor, and according to them, the squatter indeed lied about having been given the go ahead, and dropped their name by way of a mutual friend or somesuch situation. I'm also very glad to say, that my worries were hasty and misinformed. The squatter in question is the bald and scruffled, 40-to-50-year-old black man, who often hangs out on the exterior steps of the ballroom entryway. It's unclear exactly how he got in, but what is clear is that we need to step up our game by discussing all the ideas offered above. Now I really am going to sleep. I hope to dream that all of you are my familial elms, that our trunks are made of space elevators, and that our roots are made of billions of microscopic hedgehogs. And the hedgehogs are rowing canoes, of course. ~ Korl ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: "Eske Silver" <eske.silver(a)gmail.com> Date: Nov 24, 2014 3:36 PM Subject: Re: [omni-discuss] Strange man sleeping in eyeball room To: "niki" <niki.shelley(a)gmail.com> Cc: "discuss" <discuss(a)lists.omnicommons.org>, "Jenny Ryan" < tunabananas(a)gmail.com> If the situation is what I think, I feel we ought to give as much support as we can to our friend. However, I do think we ought to be strict on our tolerance level for abuse of any kind; space, place, object, and of course person. Perhaps a breakout session is due for anyone who isn't already aware of how to deal with agressive or threatening people. Especially for lone situations. Perhaps we ought to even start spending ten mins of the delegates meeting, revisiting the table of contents of our spankin new Conflict Resolution guidelines, every few or four weeks? And it's semi-off-topic, but this quote really snapped me out of some lame situations, "Theres never a good reason to light yourself on fire in order to keep someone else warm". Just food for thought. Omni can be a place where everyone is welcome to exist, dance, hack, cook, heal, build, etc. But if we don't feel comfortable and safe with each other, that can't last long. I dunno. I'm exhausted and gufflebrained, and I've lost my train of thought. Good night everyone, Have a good day :) ~ Korl 500px.com/eskesilver 510.689.4484 On Nov 24, 2014 3:09 PM, "niki" <niki.shelley(a)gmail.com> wrote: > I appreciate your consideration and compassion. > > I also want our community to be aware of potentially aggressive > individuals - especially if they run into them alone, in the wee hours. > > It's a delicate balance, for sure, between respecting an individual's > privacy and ensuring the safety of the community. > > Thanks for being so awesome, Korl <3 > > On Mon, Nov 24, 2014 at 2:58 PM, Eske Silver <eske.silver(a)gmail.com> > wrote: > >> I don't feel comfortable at this time describing the squatter, nor >> mentioning the alleged permissors name, until I've had a chance to gather >> info on said alleged permission. >> I feel that the situation is potentially an insight to a serious personal >> matter of one our members, and I want to make sure it's potential gravity >> is given due appreciation. >> As soon as I have the facts, I'll be sure to update the thread. >> But to be sure, no it was not Quickness. >> Thanks for your patience. >> >> ~ Korl >> >> 500px.com/eskesilver >> 510.689.4484 >> On Nov 24, 2014 2:52 PM, "Eske Silver" <eske.silver(a)gmail.com> wrote: >> >>> Thanks guys. X marks the spot for all roof leaks!

by David Keenan

https://omnicommons.org/wiki/Leaks There appears to be some confusion about how to semi-permanently mark the location of leaks, so that the roofer knows where on the roof to fix them.. In short, we need to mark an 'X' on the floor where the leak is. If you see a leak, please quickly mark it on the floor - don't wait.. Buckets do get put out currently, but then of course, they get moved when the rain stops - and so the info about where the leak originated on the roof is basically lost, and then the roofer doesn't fix it, and it leaks again..and so on and so forth. I made the wiki page in the hopes that this SOP regarding leaks will spread and remain persistent throughout the omniverse. . thank yoo David

do not sit on ballroom SW corner bench rite now (being worked on)?

by David Keenan

Hey guys, I'm planning on remediating a liability and building code issue with the ballroom bench bench running into the middle of a small staircase leading from the ballroom floor to the 'maintenance closet' in the SW corner of the ballroom, by cutting down the length of this bench of the West side such that the stairs are properly exposed. All the bolts have been removed, but it is still affixed with either glue or deeply embedded nails on the SW corner side, won't budge, and I need to cut the very end off to remove it, but my Fein saw is gone and my skillsaw is at home.. so it's still in place. For the time being please do not sit on this bench and definitely leave the 'do not sit' signs up. David
