FW: The White House Announces a Week of Making this June 12-18

by Mitch Altman

Does someone at Noisebridge and/or Sudo Room want to be part of the National Week of Making? If so, there's a link at the bottom of the email from the White House (copied below), but which I'll add here, too: https://www.whitehouse.gov/nation-of-makers I think it would be really cool to be "officially" involved. But there are two things that make me uncomfortable: 1) "STEM" is a term created by the US military -- it leaves out the very important "A", which many have added to make it more relevant, and moves things away from the military: STEAM 2) There is involvement from various government agencies, many of which are cool, but one of which is: Department of Homeland Security. Best, Mitch. -------- Forwarded Message -------- Subject: The White House Announces a Week of Making this June 12-18 Date: Thu, 9 Apr 2015 17:07:12 +0000 From: Santoso, Stephanie <Stephanie_M_Santoso(a)ostp.eop.gov> To: Mitch Altman Hi All, I wanted to make sure that you saw the following exciting news about the Week of Making and the National Maker Faire! Announcing a Week of Making this June 12-18 By Tom Kalil and Stephanie Santoso Last year, on June 18, President Obama hosted the first-ever White House Maker Faire and issued a call to action that “every company, every college, every community, every citizen joins us as we lift up makers and builders and doers across the country.” By democratizing the tools and skills necessary to design and make just about anything, Maker-related events and activities can inspire more people to pursue careers in design, advanced manufacturing, and the related fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and possibly take their creations to the next level and become entrepreneurs. Today, in preparation of the one-year anniversary of last year’s Faire, we are excited to announce that the White House will celebrate a “Week of Making” this summer from June 12-18. The Week will coincide with the National Maker Faire here in D.C., featuring makers from across the country and will include participation by federal agencies including: the Department of Education, National Science Foundation, U.S. Agency for International Development, U.S. Small Business Administration, Institute of Museum and Library Services, National Institute of Standards and Technology, NASA, Corporation for National and Community Service, Department of Homeland Security and the Smithsonian. At last year’s Faire, President Obama welcomed people of all ages who are funneling their ingenuity into amazing projects, developing creative solutions to important problems and bringing their innovations to market. He met Lindsay Lawlor, who built a 17-foot, talking robotic giraffe named Russell, and he met teenage sisters Camille and Genevieve Betty, whose motto is “Who needs a paper route when you can start your own robotics company?” He talked to entrepreneurs such as Marc Roth, who was homeless in San Francisco before taking classes in design and prototyping at a digital fabrication studio and maker space. After only several months of classes, Marc was able to open his own custom laser-cutting business. As the President put it, “Today’s D.I.Y is tomorrow’s Made in America.” Lindsay Lawlor introduces President Obama to Russell, the Electric Giraffe at last year’s White House Maker Faire. (Photo Credit: Pete Souza). The President announced a large number of commitments made by the Federal government, mayors, educational institutions, companies, and non-profit organizations to expand opportunities for engaging students STEM through making, supporting makers who want to become entrepreneurs and make it easier for individuals to learn 21st century design and fabrication skills around the country. Twenty-one Federal agencies committed a suite of services for people interested in engineering and manufacturing, including expanded access to start-up grants, making it easier for makers to manufacture their products domestically, and business mentoring and training. More than 150 colleges and universities, over 125 libraries and more than 90 mayors pledged to take steps to help advance making in the United States. To continue to expand upon this effort, here are some ways that you or your organization can help: · Individuals can volunteer to mentor and share their skills by hosting workshops or classes in areas of their community that have fewer opportunities for designing, developing and prototyping projects. · K-12 school districts can create opportunities for interactive, hands-on STEM learning in and outside of the classroom. Schools can also establish maker spaces to empower students to design and build, and solve real-world problems. · Colleges and universities can establish on-campus spaces that are accessible to students, faculty and the broader local community to tinker, design, build and invent. They can share best practices with other educational institutions through networks and communities of practice. · Companies can encourage making in their community through design and engineering and help designers, inventors and other aspiring entrepreneurs create American jobs by navigating the transition from prototyping to manufacturing. · Mayors can join the Mayors Maker Challenge and encourage companies, foundations, non-profits, schools, libraries and museums to get involved with product development and manufacturing. Local leaders can also back initiatives that make it easier for entrepreneurs to manufacture their products locally. And no matter who you are, you can get involved by hosting an event, workshop or activity during the Week of Making in your community or submit your project for the National Maker Faire. By working together, we can provide every child and adult in America with the tools, technologies and resources they need to be part of the creative process and invent, create, and make a better, stronger, and more innovative future. If you or your organization has plans to support students, inventors, designers, builders and other makers in your community, let us know by completing this form. We look forward to announcing progress on the President’s call to action during the Week of Making. You may also contact us at maker(a)ostp.gov. Tom Kalil is Deputy Director for Technology and Innovation at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. Stephanie Santoso is Senior Advisor for Making at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. Here Is what Centi sent me about Pidgeon's Violation of the Non-engagement agreement: Pigeon and I completed a conflict mediation process at the Omni facilitated by Jenny and Ryan. The outcome was a mutual non-engagement agreement. Pigeon has admitted to me, and others, to having sexually assaulted my friend Charity in 2012 at a homeless shelter in Portland. The last time I saw Charity was several months ago, she was pregnant and living on the street in Eugene. When I was taking a shit in the upstairs bathroom at the Omni, Pigeon knocked on the door to check if someone is inside. I responded that I would be out in a minute. Pigeon, then wrote a series of messages on tape that included 'Knock thrice to banish entitlement demons', and posted them on the bathroom door, directed at me. Pigeon's former girlfriend Maria, disclosed that Pigeon made posts on twitter such as "Everyone at that house should be stabbed and shot" which included me, along with other violent suggestions Pigeon took a picture of me on her phone, directly outside the Omni last week, when I was walking inside the Omni Recently, Pigeon has made hostile and provocative sound gestures when I have walked past her in the Omni When I was at the Omni the entire day doing research on the computer in the Sudo Room, I walked outside to smoke a cigarette, and left my back pack. Pigeon was sitting nearby the whole time I was there, and then filled the bottom of my bag with rotten eggs and food waste, which stained my books and personal items while I was outside and my bag was unattended. My bag still smells. Pigeon took pictures of me on her phone in the social services office. Pigeon attempted to get Charlie fired from her job by contacting her employer. Pigeon has threatened and chased Dante with a hammer. Pigeon has been exposed, within groups, for spreading lies and false rumors about select people. Including, false information that has placed individuals within dangerous, high-risk, and unsafe positions. Pigeon has recklessly and indiscriminately made claims against groups of people including, transphobia and transbashing, despite contrary evidence. Pigeons chronic behavior has damaged, neutralized, compromised, and interfered with constructive work and a matrix of social relationships. Fwd: Today 4/4/15: Pidgen and Daren have been temp banned for safer spaces policy violations

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: WIld Cat <wildcatofthewoods(a)gmail.com> Date: Tue, Apr 7, 2015 at 3:29 AM Subject: Re: [sudo-discuss] Today 4/4/15: Pidgen and Daren have been temp banned for safer spaces policy violations To: Hol Gaskill <hol(a)gaskill.com> Cc: Rachel Wolfsohn <rawjnana(a)gmail.com>, "mediation(a)omnicommons.org" < mediation(a)omnicommons.org>, cdc(a)lists.omnicommons.org "* If you don't believe people can change, you don't believe in RJ or TJ, **and I would LOVE to hear your alternative**to my eyes the only other options are punishment or annihilation, like the state does,** if you're really radical, you'll seek alternative forms of resolution** besides exile, punishment and "training" people, * *whenever possible. I do believe people can change but sometimes you need to draw a line and make sure that the mediation process isn't being abused by the perpetrator. Comparing my forms of dealing with accountability to the State and it's prison/jail industrial complex is gravely offensive to me. I have been to jail before for being homeless - ( 3 charges of tresspassing) - stopping cops from beating people up or using a car to crash into a crowd -( 2 charges obstructing a peace officer)- getting crashed into by a cop - (assault on an officer- charges dropped) stopping the earth from being destroyed and otherwise homeless peoples camps by blockade ( 2 charges obstruction of a roadway) Every time was arrested I endured beatings as well as mental and once extreme physical torture. Comparing my process to such a brutal process as the state's is really fucked up.* NOT ONCE have I seen you actually pursue mediation. No one has asked me to attend a meeting or anything but when ever people have wanted to talk to me I have stopped what I was doing to talk about accountability issues. This is pursuing mediation. I also took the ban proposals to the sudo meetings and have an informal mediation with FNB Joe. *IN FACT WildCAt is currently refusing to participate in more than one mediation, **and while in some cases i actually agree with that other person being banned, and see the issues clear** my problem wtih this is not about that person being banned,** I often think WildCat is right,* * but it's about THE PROCESS AND RESPECTING IT Not wanting to engage with people I do not feel safe around is not failing to mediate. Like I have said no one asked me to go to a follow up meeeting.* *You Still Have To Go To Mediation **In Some Case In Your Life, Why would i be talking on this list if i wasnt interested in mediation* *If You Recognize The Process At All - * Rachel I followed process by emailing y'all and I followed the steps of the Safer Spaces policy: "These are some examples of unacceptable behavior. This list is by no means exhaustive. Harassment includes but is not limited to: - *Deliberate intimidation - Babs and I * - *Deliberate misgendering or use of ‘dead’ or rejected names - Calling me a dude and man with aggressive and accentuaded tone implying it was intentional misgendering* - *Threats of violence - Telling me that we should walk a couple of blocks to settle it like adults implying he wanted to fight.* - *Gratuitous or off-topic sexual images or behaviour in spaces where they’re not appropriate - Telling me he liked phone sex the yelling at me about how I needed to get off of my phone in sudo room. rather than asking me calmly,* 4.‎ ‏Consequences‭ ‬of‭ ‬Unacceptable‭ ‬Behavior Unacceptable‭ ‬behavior‭ ‬from‭ ‬any‭one at the Omni,‭ ‬including‭ ‬sponsors‭ ‬and‭ ‬those‭ ‬with‭ ‬decision-making‭ ‬authority,‭ ‬will‭ ‬not‭ ‬be‭ ‬tolerated. Anyone‭ ‬asked‭ ‬to‭ ‬stop‭ ‬unacceptable‭ ‬behavior‭ ‬is‭ ‬expected‭ ‬to‭ ‬comply‭ ‬immediately. If‭ ‬someone‭ ‬engages‭ ‬in‭ ‬unacceptable‭ ‬behavior,‭* anyone* at the Omni‬‭ should feel empowered to take action to address the situation (i.e., talk to the person involved, point out violent or threatening behavior, *ask them to leave the space*, etc.). In cases where someone's safety is at risk, a temporary ban may be put in place until the Omni's conflict resolution process can be followed to resolution. ‬ 5.‎ ‏If‭ ‬You‭ ‬Witness‭ ‬or‭ ‬Are‭ ‬Subject‭ ‬to‭ ‬Unacceptable‭ ‬Behavior This section needs to be fleshed out more - please see it as a draft in progress. - *Everyone should feel empowered to confront aggressive individuals, but we recommend that you do not approach a potentially violent conflict without another community member, preferably a core organizer, co-present.* _______________________________ *If You're Willing To Work On It " - I am working my ass off on it.* *BTW I talked to people who lived at Hellarity (susie and enola) whom confirmed that Darin was asked to leave multiple times for sexually innapripriate behaivor but keeped showing up. * *Also he was banned from the G-spot Squat immediately after for sexually grinding on/groping a person during a party which Susie Q and I were at.
