https://www.meetup.com/San-Francisco-TypeScript-Meetup/events/242230151/ We've been talking a lot about functional programming on Thursday Javascript nights, so perhaps some of you would be interested in a meetup on Typescript at Noisebridge. Maybe this warrants a fieldtrip? -L

Cabinets for donation

by robb

Barbera Brady stopped by offering to donate these cabinets & cost of uhaul if needed. She met Adam & thought sudoroom might want them as they were her father's & he was a hacker/engineer type. Ideally, we would get them by the end of August if not sooner

DIY Safe Solar Eclipse viewing glasses

by aaronco36

Anyone here know how someone could make their own solar eclipse glasses in order to safely view the August 21st solar eclipse?? Was thinking of using multiply-folded metallized film laminate that's found in common antistatic bags for a filter. AFAICT, 5X foldings of the 2-ply antistatic bags -- 10 layers in total -- similar to those described at http://www.all-spec.com/Catalog/Static-Control/ESD-Safe-Bags/Static-Shieldi… and at http://multimedia.3m.com/mws/mediawebserver?mwsId=SSSSSuUn_zu8l00xM82xlx_eN… seem to _completely_ block out all sunlight. All local stores in the general SudoRoom part of the East Bay that I've so far contacted are already out of stock or are running very low on manufactured and properly ISO-certified eclipse glasses, e.g., those type of places listed at www.yahoo.com/news/where-buy-eclipse-glasses-total-130000190.html Have also seen the warnings about buying counterfeit glasses, e.g., at http://abcnews.go.com/US/avoid-buying-counterfeit-solar-eclipse-glasses/sto… TY for good suggestions, -A aaronco36(a)sdf.org SDF Public Access UNIX System - http://sdf.org

getting rid of sewing machine and embroidery machine tables

by Jake

we've talked about this before but.. does anyone object to selling/giving away the giant JUKI sewing machine table AND embroidery machine table? i wish we could keep the latter (it's really cool when it works!) but since I haven't been able to get it to work (and i tried) i'm ready to give up on it. if nobody objects or offers a plan, i'll post them on craigslist and get them out of the space, for free if necessary. -jake

Meeting Minutes for August 9th!

by Jenny Ryan

We had a great turnout for tonight's party, and even had a productive meeting in the middle of it all! Notes below, and recorded for posterity at: https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Meeting_Notes_2017-08-09 *August 9th, 2017* == regular meeting == === finance update === * jenny: still not making what we need to make to break even every month ($2012) - have $1700 in our account and have yet to pay august rent * charley: i sold most of the rest of our bitcoins, so add $5300 * even with this great boon of fortune, need to be in the black re: monthly average income vs expenses * creative fundraising ideas encouraged! === rayc returns === rayc was present and summarized his recent email taking accountability for previous behaviors that resulted in his being asked to leave, past two years of creating more life stability, and desire to return to the space. a quorum of 10 members were present, consenting to his being allowed back in the space. membership application is pending extended pondering (1 month) == new members break-out submeeting == === Matt === Email: matthew.p.haney(a)gmail.com Why do you want to be a member of sudo room?: Since quitting a data scientist job two years ago I have been travelling and doing other non-tech stuff, so my programming skills have become a bit rusty. I am looking for a space and community in which I can unrust those skills, and get back into things. If you know already, what are you excited to do at sudo room?: To unrust my programming skills and learn new ones I plan to pursue a few small toy projects, like doing some data visualization of US census data. Also interested in learning how to build a project around Ethereum smart contracts. But my real passion is around using VR to induce altered states of consciousness for therapeutic, recreational, and spiritual ends. If you know already, what are you excited to share with the sudo room community?: Not sure yet, some of what I have learned/experienced studying yoga, meditation, somatics, and non ordinary states of consciousness might be of interest. Have you ever been banned from another hackerspace? If so, when and why?: Nope abolish sexual violence etc? don't be a dick. stop dickish behavior when seen. end extinction etc? devise open source solutions for post-capitalistic society freedom etc? decentralization, cryptography, open source again contact? email schedule? open. probably drop in during the day, and for events. problem for you? nope. === Kyle === : To be disentangled later Would you like to *very briefly* introduce yourself? * Kyle Mitchell, hacker, lawyer, ne'erdowell, general scallywaggery(?) skullduggery What brings you to sudo room? * Marc Juul's abiding charm. Wait, no, April Glaser. What do you want to hack or learn at sudo room (if you know)? * Everything. Work on amplifiers, various ill-advised motorcycle modifications, writing crap software, What do you want to share or teach at sudo room (if you know)? * I have more to learn, but ... I have a healthy disrespect for tools I'm good with. I love listening tools. They don't get enough love. What's your plan to abolish sexual violence, police brutality and white supremacy? in 10 words or less * Run to the fire, file the paperwork What's your plan to end the anthropocene extinction, world hunger, global warming and global inequality? in 10 words or less * Shut up and listen more. What's your plan to ensure freedom and privacy of communication for all? in 10 words or less * Stop with the tools, talk to people. expectations (SOS, safer space policy, etc) * not a problem Have you ever been banned, asked to take a break, or similar, from a hackerspace or any other collective? * no What are the best ways to contact you? * email: kyle(a)kemitchell.com What is your schedule like? Do you have particular times that you think you'll be around? You should check out our regular events! * no, very flexible schedule. will try to make meetings. Explain the next steps in the membership process and what they should expect == === Rayc === Would you like to *very briefly* introduce yourself? * Hi, I'm Rayc. I'm not an alcoholic. What brings you to sudo room? * No comment. The overwhelming awesomeness of sudo room and the omni commons. What do you want to hack or learn at sudo room (if you know)? * I'd like to do some audio stuff, do some energy efficient improvements for my car, work with maybe skill sharing, skill and knowledge exchange, work on different projects that I've had on my mind for a while around efficiency such as getting my car to run more efficiently. I like fixing stuff, electronics, playing around with that, doing some audio stuff as well. And I will further append this next month. I'm overwhelmed. What do you want to share or teach at sudo room (if you know)? * I want to teach people how to burn stuff efficiently, in a very safe, focused, efficient manner. Definitely. What's your plan to abolish sexual violence, police brutality and white supremacy? in 10 words or less * spreading empathy and understanding to the troubles those factors cause What's your plan to end the anthropocene extinction, world hunger, global warming and global inequality? in 10 words or less * Globalization What's your plan to ensure freedom and privacy of communication for all? in 10 words or lessexpectations * Encryption. Encrypt the planet. Have you ever been banned, asked to take a break, or similar, from a hackerspace or any other collective? * Hackerspaces (emphasis on plural). I have. What are the best ways to contact you? * Via email or my cell phone. Feel free to list it. What is your schedule like? Do you have particular times that you think you'll be around? You should check out our regular events! * Probably in the evenings from 7-9 or 7-10, and on the weekends a bit more flexibly, maybe during the day more. Jenny read the SOS/etc policy stuff. "Is this going to be a problem for you?" * Not at all. -- <3 Jenny Help open a people-powered common space in Oakland, California! https://omnicommons.org/donate `~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~` "Technology is the campfire around which we tell our stories." -Laurie Anderson "Storytelling reveals meaning without committing the error of defining it." -Hannah Arendt "To define is to kill. Missing microscope lenses

by Patrik D'haeseleer

Hi all, If you have borrowed any of the microscope objectives or eyepiece lenses from CCL, please return them as soon as possible. If you see any microscopes sitting out, that is likely because they are in use on a regular basis, and they will be sorely missed if not in working order! Please don't remove parts from lab equipment without checking with someone first. So, please return our lenses - no questions asked. We have a pretty good idea exactly when they disappeared, but we'd rather not have to do the detective work to figure out who was where when. Let alone having to install cameras or lock up all of our lab gear, which defeats the purpose of having a community lab. Thanks! Patrik

anyone wanna buy some bitcoins?

by Marc Juul

It turns out that sudo room suddenly has $8,600 in bitcoin! How did this happen? I don't know! I think we should immediately sell at least enough to pay our debt to Omni. Any sudo members who think we shouldn't just sell every single bitcoin right now while the price is high? -- marc/juul
