Hi sudoers! A documentary crew will be at Counter Culture Labs on Sunday October 29th starting at 2 pm, shooting video until around 5 pm. We'd really appreciate it if people could be quiet during that time :) We will ensure that no sudo folk get into the video unless we get their consent. Thanks in advance! -- marc/juul

~ -two urgent proposals for tomorrow's meeting ~

by Jenny Ryan

Hey omninoms, I've gotten backlogged on work this past week and apologize for the urgency of this email. Tonight or tomorrow I'll be sending along two proposals that require relatively rapid response. Unfortunately, I'm still waiting back on final feedback from Jesse (our lawyer) and a written proposal from The Village, but I wanted to send something out tonight so that it's on folks' radar: 1) Fiscally sponsoring (grant model) a crowdfunding campaign that Daniel launched on October 7th to raise funds for a school in Guatemala that was devastated by a tropical storm: https://www.youcaring.com/escuelaoficialbarriochajsaquil-974517 ** Deadline to attach a bank account is October 22nd, but we may be able to retroactively reroute funds sent to a personal bank account.* 2) Fiscally sponsoring (project model, possible application for Omni membership) The Village, which has successfully pressured the City of Oakland to declare a Shelter Crisis Ordinance and agree to hand over some city-owned land parcels for them to build viable villages for the homeless and provide wraparound support services. ** Deadline to provide proof of fiscal sponsorship and associated General Liability insurance is October 24th.* There are of course more detailed aspects to each of these proposals, but they remain pending for the time being - our shared deadline is tomorrow before the Delegate's Meeting. In terms of expediting these important projects, we could figure out a way to do this fairly that might include 1) provisional fiscal sponsorship (eg, 1-3 months), 2) abstentions from collectives that have consensus processes but would likely not object, and 3) utilizing old-omni's 501c3 to sponsor The Village, which has the same board as omni but no assets that could be put into jeopardy. I will post each proposal as a separate post to this list (I've cc'd sudo and all are encouraged to forward to their collectives) sometime over the next 24 hours. <3 Jenny Help open a people-powered common space in Oakland, California! https://omnicommons.org/donate `~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~` "Technology is the campfire around which we tell our stories." -Laurie Anderson "Storytelling reveals meaning without committing the error of defining it." -Hannah Arendt "To define is to kill. seeking a low-power computer with 2 or more ethernet ports

by Jake

i'm looking for a small low-power computer with at least two ethernet ports. gigabit would be preferred although i wouldn't turn down an older one since I have nothing at this point. I want to make a router for my house, to go between the comcast bullshit and my internal network. just a raw motherboard would be fine but with a case is fine too. i should mention that i want something that doesn't take unnecessary power, and ideally i'll be powering it from 12vdc using a little converter like this: https://images10.newegg.com/NeweggImage/ProductImage/ACJ4_1_201706217303591… thank you -jake

I want to make a router for my house, to go between the comcast bullshit and my internal network. How about using a fairly low-cost and low-power assemblage of a Raspberry Pi 3 [2] along with one or two extra USB Gigabit Ethernet dongles attached, and using an RPi3 distro for a sort of DIY "Poorman's"/"Poorperson's"-type router ?? According to David Both's 'Firewall your home network with a Raspberry Pi' [3], he's successfully used an ASIX AX88178 USB Gigabit Ethernet dongle as a second Ethernet port. According to to the Alpine Linux's 'Linux Router with VPN on a Raspberry Pi' [4], the Apple USB Ethernet Adapter [5] is recommended as it contains a ASIX AX88772 which "has good Linux support". There is further discussion on the Raspberry Pi Stack Exchange about setting up and using such an RPi as a router/firewall, e.g., see [6] and [7] The wifi KRACK attack vulnerability that's infesting WPA-protected networks -- e.g., see Marc J's recent Mesh post [8] -- might even make it _imperative_ (yes?|no?) to disable the RPi 3's WiFi connectivity for such a dual-homed+ router. > just a raw motherboard would be fine but with a case is fine too. It's fairly easy to obtain or make a case for an RPi3. It's also definitely recommended to use a powered USB hub for powering the Rpi3 itself as well as the one or two Gigabit Ethernet dongles on this router. Hope that this helps :-) -A References ====================== [1]https://sudoroom.org/pipermail/sudo-discuss/2017-October/013635.html [2]https://www.raspberrypi.org/products/raspberry-pi-3-model-b/ [3]https://opensource.com/life/16/3/firewall-your-home-network-raspberry-pi [4]https://wiki.alpinelinux.org/wiki/Linux_Router_with_VPN_on_a_Raspberry_Pi [5]https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MC704LL/A/apple-usb-ethernet-adapter [6]https://raspberrypi.stackexchange.com/questions/7223/using-the-raspberry-… [7]https://raspberrypi.stackexchange.com/questions/13860/how-would-raspberry… [8]https://sudoroom.org/pipermail/mesh/2017-October/002636.html ====================== aaronco36(a)sdf.org SDF Public Access UNIX System - http://sdf.org

someone left in a huff

by Jake

tonight at Hardware Hacking Tuesday, a friend of mine showed up and set his bag down on the floor before greeting others who were here. His bag touched some of the property of someone who had quite a lot of stuff, and that person berated my friend for touching his property without permission and made what I thought was quite a big deal out of it. my friend was very apologetic (I would not have been) but this did little to calm the person down, who seemed deeply offended and continued to try to make my friend feel bad for touching another person's property without permission. i stepped in and told the person that I thought they had quite a lot of stuff, which was spilling into walkways and very uncontained, and I asked them to please move some of it out of the way. They responded that they were just going to leave because I had made them feel "unwelcome". They then packed up their stuff and left. the item in question, that was "touched" by my friends' bag, was a sleeping bag. -jake

Crow Funding for Students (Q'eqchi', Kiche, and Mam) in Guatemala

by danarauz＠gmail.com

Hello Sudoroom folks, I hope you don't mind me sending this email to the list, but I hope some of you could help these students. Please, when you get a chance, see the details+images on this page I put together. https://www.youcaring.com/help-escuela-chajsaquil-recover-from-flood The short version is that, on October 5th, a tropical storm flooded the Escuela Mixta Official Barrio Chajsaquil and their already old furniture got ruined even more. How I learned about this is because I joined their Facebook group after meeting its principal and knowing the building itself when I was traveling in Guatemala in Dec. 2016. This time I was wondering if you know of someone/organization/company that could help the school economically to bring these students new desks, and other needed school furniture. The list its in the fundraising page linked above. If so, please share the link and this email if you want. In regards of donors wanting a tax exempt form, I am in the process of getting approved by OmniCommons. So they can be the financial sponsor; so Omni be the one sending the money to the school. We are open to the person/organization/company also being the direct donors to the school itself. The school location: Escuela Official Barrio Chajsaquil San Pedro Carcha, Alta Verapaz Guatemala Thank you, and thank you for all you do to make this world a better place. Sincerely, Daniel Arauz Cell: 415.336.9143 <(415)%20336-9143> Signal: 415.336.9143 <https://whispersystems.org/>
