Spectacular Movements screening Wednesday June 13

by Julio Rios

Omnifolk! There is a cool film showing on Wednesday in the ballroom. Unfortunately, I can't be there, but Robb will be in case you have questions. Thanks, Julio ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Mateo Hinojosa <mateo(a)nativeland.org> Date: Thu, Jun 7, 2018 at 6:01 PM Subject: Re: Spectacular Movements screening The film, *Spectacular Movements* follows the young indigenous and mestizo actors of Teatro Trono in Bolivia, who stir up collective memories of the social movements that sparked the latest revolution, and create performances for their itinerant theater-truck and the street, manifesting the spirits of the dead themselves to seek delayed justice and creative transformation. Here's the trailer: https://vimeo.com/110611251. We are delighted to have Iván, the founder of Teatro Trono, present for a Q&A along with director Mateo Hinojosa. This is a film that was collaboratively made with Bolivian theater- and movement-makers, about social, political and identity movements, and so it is a film to see in community—hope to see you there! WHEN: Wed, June 13, 6:30-9pm, projection beginning at 7pm WHERE: Omni Commons, 4799 Shattuck, Oakland Please spread the word!

Status of SR website?

by aaronco36

Entering https://sudoroom.org gets us... 503 Service Unavailable ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Service Unavailable The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Apache/2.4.10 (Debian) Server at sudoroom.org Port 443 Maybe Lifewire's "503 Service Unavailable How to fix a 503 Service Unavailable error" at www.lifewire.com/503-service-unavailable-explained-2622940 might help here? Could be all that's required is something relatively straightforward like a router reboot or reloading of the webserver. Omni Commons's omnicommons.org loads well enough.

Pop-up canopy tent for CCL booth at Temescal Fair this Sunday?

by Patrik D'haeseleer

Hi all, Does anyone have one of those pop-up canopies that we could borrow for our CCL booth at the Temescal Street Fair this Sunday? I believe I've seen one in the basement at one point, but I don't know if it's still there, or who it belongs to... Thanks! Patrik

Omni Media Lab: Initial Convergence

by Jenny Ryan

Let's have a meetup to discuss visions, values, and available resources to build out a community media lab in Omni's basement! Tonight, the Omni consensed on Art Bison Design Coop's move to the basement and transition to becoming a community screenprinting studio! Perhaps an ABDC member could speak to what that might entail for the basement and what would be needed wrt renovations/improvements? Afterwards, we initiated a conversation about ongoing ideas over the past many months to build out a truly inter-collective community media lab for creating rad propaganda, zines, banners etc: * Over the past 9 months, there have been many discussions about, and a > good deal of work put into, the basement area formerly known as Material > Print Machine as a potential inter-collective media lab for printing, > copying, button-making, screenprinting, banner-making, zine-making, > newspapers etc. Interested folks who've discussed the idea and/or worked on > cleaning and clearing out that space include Jenny, Robb, Abe, Julian, > Needa Bee, Marcus, and others I'm probably forgetting right now. > ** The structure that seems most fitting is that of a working group, open > to anyone to join and help steward and maintain the resources we already > have available. The idea would be to lock valuable materials / supplies in > a cabinet and host workshops, media-making sessions and offer access based > on sliding-scale donations to cover materials/supplies/maintenance costs. > ** For more info on the resources we already have available as well as a > proposed layout, see: https://omnicommons.org/wiki/Basement#Media_Lab > Continued discussion in the meeting notes at https://pad.riseup.net/p/omninom ... maybe not mentioned: the lighting ballasts need to be replaced. There are some interim lighting solution tee'd up beneath the bench dat robb built. *I'd like to propose an initial meetup of folks interested in working on this project for the afternoon of Saturday, May 19th or, alternatively, the Friday evening before it. Here is a Doodle for all y'all busy-ass folks: https://doodle.com/poll/ag7er35pqkac5b2a <https://doodle.com/poll/ag7er35pqkac5b2a>* An initial agenda draft lives here: https://peoplesopen.net/pad/p/omnimedialab - please add to it as you see fit! and invite people whom you think may be interested... <3 Jenny Help open a professional kitchen at the Omni Commons in Oakland! https://omnicommons.org/kitchen `~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~` "Technology is the campfire around which we tell our stories." -Laurie Anderson "Storytelling reveals meaning without committing the error of defining it." -Hannah Arendt "To define is to kill. Fwd: [omni-consensus] Media Lab Proposal

by Jenny Ryan

Hey sudoers! Hoping this can pass on Thursday, but just saw that it hadn't been forwarded to sudo-discuss. Could folks discuss @ meeting-party tonight? If current delegate(s) could please remember to forward omni 'consensus' proposals to sudo-discuss, that would be raaaad! FYI - we are having a basement cleanout/work party on Thursday, June 7th from 12-6pm. There will indubitably be delicious foods and cold drinks for volunteers! <3 Jenny ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Laura Turiano <scylla(a)riseup.net> Date: Thu, May 17, 2018 at 2:43 PM Subject: [omni-consensus] Media Lab Proposal To: "consensus(a)lists.omnicommons.org" <consensus(a)lists.omnicommons.org> https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ebaHkaSeCWHKKEjbg6u- VvDzifF-eFuBX_b_HmdDv0E/edit#heading=h.r94oqxqphwnu _______________________________________________ consensus mailing list consensus(a)lists.omnicommons.org https://omnicommons.org/lists/listinfo/consensus Ungoogled: Overview We propose to build a community media laboratory for the production of propaganda and educational materials for campaigns and projects. Our mission is to transform the most neglected space in Omni Commons into a place for creative production available to Omni members, and, eventually, local artists, activists, organizers, and members of the general public (either supervised or trained), sustained through sliding-scale donations, grants, mutual aid, and creative reuse. A new working group will steward supplies, tools, and resources, as well as host educational hands-on workshops. Approval of this proposal means the formation of an official committee of the Board to manage a Media Lab, and acceptance of the following general plan. Resources We have currently: - A large-format plotter - A vinyl cutter - A Tecre button-maker and supplies - Screenprinting equipment and press (ABDC) - Digital duplicator - Several Xerox copiers - Various printers - Laminator - Ream paper cutter (2) - Book scanner (current under development in sudo) - Miscellaneous crafting supplies and materials Proposed Services - Community media lab with regular open hours (TBD) and services rendered by appointment; - An archive of art and media produced in the lab, including historical propaganda produced for past events, causes, and actions in the community; - Regular, public workshops on topics such as zine-making, button-making, screen printing, banner-making, printing, graphic design and illustration. WG Members Attendees of our first meeting on May 11th were: Anka (LibLens/FNB), Ken (CCL), Robb (Sudo/LibLens), Jenny (Sudo), Laura, Sierk (Sudo), and Phil (FNB). Interested potential members include Kazoo (ABDC), Marcus (ABDC), Vienna (ABDC), Sara (ABDC), Julian (BAPS), Abe, Gerald (LibLens/FNB), and Rayc (Sudo) Media Lab Structure Governance The Media Lab Working Group will be modeled on the structure of the Commons Working Group. Members will receive formal training that will: familiarize them with Omni and Medial Lab policies and procedures; provide them with the skills to maintain Media Lab equipment, and supervise others’ use of the equipment; prepare them to share in management of incoming requests for Media Lab usage. The WG will collectively develop the policies and procedures with final approval by the Delegates, and maintain and manage the Lab. This will include maintaining financial records in collaboration with the Finance WG and making regular reports to the Board. Operations Supplies and equipment will be labeled with suggested donation for use. Donations will go toward supplies and machine maintenance (estimated at approximately $200-500/month, depending on amount of use). Individual WG members may contract with outside groups to fill orders for a fee (as with our AV techs) with approval of the WG. Over time, we expect the medialab to become capable of regular contributions to the Omni as a whole for space and utilities usage, and propose a check in approximately 6 months after move-in (June 1st, with check in on Dec. 1st). Users who are not part of the Media Lab WG will need to make an appointment to use the equipment or come during regular open hours, which are yet to be determined. This is to help ensure that equipment is not damaged and supply use is monitored. When not in use, supplies and equipment will be either stored in a locked cabinet or secured in place. If possible, electronics will require some kind of electronic code to function. The best way to do this is under discussion. We will submit a second proposal after build-out is complete to formalize the process for how collectives, members, and eventually outside folks will access. Intended Users Intended users of the Omni Media Lab include, by priority: 1. Omni Media Lab Working Group members (free) 2. Omni Member Collectives and collective members (free some set # of times / year, sliding scale donation) 3. Aligned community groups and organizations (by sliding-scale donation, or negotiated rate) 4. General public (by sliding-scale fee, or negotiated rate) Floor Plan Lab will be located in the Old Material Print Machine area (550 sq ft): Current conditions: Before cleanup After cleanup Future possibilities! Building Plan and Estimated Construction Budget The designated area will be cleared out. We will give TIL once more opportunity to remove the broken offset printer, and if they can’t, we will break it down and remove it. Old fluorescent lights will be removed and replaced with energy efficient and inexpensive LED tube lights (see link below). Missing ceiling tiles will be replaced. Floor will be primed and painted with concrete paint. Walls and ceiling will be painted. In the future, additional electrical outlets may be added if needed.
