Wnb night this coming Monday: can’t make it

by Juliana A

Hey I won't be able to make it this coming Monday since I'll be coming back from a trip. Sorry i had a couple of trips booked before starting this. If any wnb from this list want to be in charge it’s totally fine! It seems there's always people at Omni C on Monday evenings, so getting in should not be an issue.-- julianaferreira(a)gmail.com

laser cutter exhaust needs reworking

by Jake

The exhaust duct for the laser cutter is definitely not working. I am in sudoroom with someone who is cutting plain simple wood, and it's killing me. It's someone I invited to do the cutting so i'm putting up with it but I am eager to leave and get some fresh air. We definitely need to improve the ventilation situation somehow. 1. There is definitely leakage around the fan output, spraying smoke into the room before it even goes into the exhaust duct. It's basically a mass of duct tape because someone who was very desperate to laser cut stuff to sell on the street wanted to just throw more tape at the job until it sort of worked. We need to measure the diameter of the fan output and the diameter of the duct, and buy the proper adaptor (or 3d print it???) 2. The exhaust duct has holes in it. They have been taped over and I don't feel any leaks there, but it's definitely something to look for and fix properly. 3. the interface of the duct to the hole through the skylight is suspect! It was installed by someone I personally know to sometimes half-ass things (me) and it has not been inspected since 2014. It's a 1/4" thick piece of wood that's simply pulled up against the skylight hole and could be leaking there. We need to go on the roof and check on that. 4. even if all the above are perfect, the smoke will be exiting just above the skylight and could be very well getting sucked back into the room from the top. We should build an exhaust stack a few feet high to make sure the fumes go...away. I would say that presently the laser cutter's exhaust is so insufficient that people should not be using it until it's fixed. -jake On Fri, 10 Jun 2022, Arthur Ulfeldt via sudo-discuss wrote: > this is a 12 inch plastic duct. it appears to be sufficiently attached. the > big hole in the side not notwithstanding ;) > non conductive ducts don't need grounding. > > On Fri, Jun 10, 2022 at 1:23 PM mark burdett <mfburdett(a)gmail.com> wrote: > >> I found some articles online about laser cutter exhaust and it says check >> the manufacturer's specs to make sure airflow and pressure is maintained >> (e.g. use 6" duct if it's too long for 4" to do the job). wifi not working, new wifi access point in sudoroom

by Jake

tonight at sudoroom, i noticed that "the internet" was not working very well, and my phone was having trouble connecting at all to the wifi. And the signal strength was very weak. i tried "the internet" on the desktop computer on the 3d printer table, which is wired into the ethernet (doesn't use wifi) and since it seemed to work fine, i determined that something was wrong with the wifi. i tried power-cycling the ruckus wifi controller (singular rackmount unit that configures the many wifi access points throughout the building) and I also power-cycled the main switch (which also powers most of those access points) but nothing changed. Then peter and I noticed that the access point in sudoroom (mounted to the wood high above the wall-mounted TV telescreen) was not lighting up any LEDs on the switch, indicating that it's not drawing power from the switch or operating at all. That would explain the weak signal strength. so I grabbed a black TP-LINK TL-WDR3600 from upstairs, and i configured it (with the stock firmware) to be an access point on the network. its IP address is 100.64.64.12 and it doesn't do any routing or dhcp. email me if you want the login/password. it provides two accesss points, sudoroom-TPLINK and sudoroom-TPLINK_5 and it seems to work. the ruckus wifi controller is listed in the Network wiki but nobody knows the password (the login is probably admin) so we will probably have to factory-reset the whole system in order to get back in. If anyone makes any progress on that i would love to know. the non-functioning ruckus hardware mounted high above the TV in sudoroom is too high for me to reach, and i'm not motivated enough to get a ladder, and it's not hurting anybody up there. But if we have more of them maybe we can install another one so that the Omni Commons network can reach into here again. But for now, Omni Commons wifi is giving an "authentication error" -jake

Re: [omni-building] Omni Commons wifi not working

by danarauz＠gmail.com

Hello Folks, Sorry for the late reply, but it's been years now that I stay away from Google as much as I can. This address is no longer my main email address, so I don't check it that often. I could stop by tomorrow and see what I can do to get the WiFi going. Someone please Signal me the Network info (Network IP/Prefix, Gateway, DNS(s)). I don't have a card|key to access Omni; if the door is closed what should I do? I forgot the Sudomesh server area cage's lock code. :( I am assuming that if cabling tools are needed I should find some there (in the cage), correct? I will be arriving there at about noon. Thanks, Daniel Google/Gmail makes me sick. Is wifi off everywhere in Omni? We need it for CDP event tonight! Will try to investigate this afternoon On Wed, Jun 8, 2022, 2:04 AM Jake <jake(a)spaz.org> wrote: > The wifi at omni is not working right. Hardware Hacking Tuesday is tonight

by Jake

Hi everyone, (You're getting this email either because 1) you're on the sudoroom discuss email list, or 2) because I BCC'd you directly.) Tonight I'll be hosting Sudoroom for those who want to come hack on whatever in person, or through telepresence (see the last link in this email) ALSO NOW FEATURING: Softwear hacking too: most Tuesday evenings the sewing area at Omni Commons (adjacent to sudoroom) is also active so bring your fabric and textile projects and technical repairs; we've got heavy duty and serger sewing machines available. You’re also welcome to bring your own machine to have it checked out and tuned up for tip-top operation or to just sew alongside others. Remember that Omni Commons and Sudoroom policy is presently that EVERYONE MUST WEAR A MASK AT ALL TIMES INSIDE THE BUILDING. (if you want to eat something you should go outside) in the past few weeks, we've had about 5-15 people over the course of the evening, not including remote participants who logged in through telepresence Jenny put it on the Omni calendar: https://omnicommons.org/blog/events/hardware-hack-night-3-2022-03-01/ Here it is on the sudoroom page: https://sudoroom.org/events/hardware-hack-night-2022-02-15/ that says 7PM but I try to be there soon after 6pm. if you get to the door (at the corner of 48th and shattuck) and you can't get in, call me or someone else who's there to let you in! Email me if you don't have my phone number. Actually a great way to get our attention is to join the video chat link at the end of this email! We don't always hear the doorbell and I don't answer it anyway! You should get on this sudoroom discuss mailinglist! click here: https://sudoroom.org/lists/postorius/lists/sudo-discuss.sudoroom.org/ and you should donate monthly to sudoroom, monthly, by signing up here: https://sudoroom.org/humans and if you want to make a one-time donation, you can go here: https://sudoroom.org/donate if you can't make it in person: join the jitsi videochat with the room, and chat with each other as well as a giant TV screen/speakerphone on the wall: https://meet.waag.org/turtlesturtlesturtles (don't worry if you're the only one in the "room", others will join eventually, and if the camera is pointed at the floor, just yell until someone comes and talks to you and then ask them to aim it back up into the room) see you soon! -jake
