Hello everybody! I updated the BATMAN-adv page and I think it would be helpful to take a different approach to editing the wiki. We should still work on the page on our own, but I would like to have a page that's focused on every week. I'm looked at the popular pages on our wiki and that's why I chose this page. https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Special:PopularPages https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Mesh/BATMAN-adv I most tried to highlight the commands that would be used more often while also simplifying some of the technical details. All thoughts are appreciated. Take care, Jeremy

ServerRoom Update: July 21, 2014 11:37PM

by Somebody

Awesomeness: Thanks David K, David ?, Jeremy, and Sally for your help. That was a lot of stuff!! The area got 96% cleared up. We moved the 2 Two Posts Racks, and the improvised server cart holding three two Servers and a Dell Desktop. If someone could clear up the rest of the stuff would super! What is left? A black big cabinet, and miscellaneous stuff left on and around the shelf. Many Thanks! p.s. staged-photo ;) hehe

Emery Connect - ?

by Pete Forsyth

All: Are you aware of Emery Connect? I just happened upon this pretty randomly, it's the city of Emeryville's effort to provide fiber connections to all businesses and homes in that city. Their "Open Access" page is interesting (quoted below). I wonder if there might be an opportunity for People's Open to work with them, to get access to, and across, Emeryville? *EmeryConnect is an inclusive network available to all Internet providers and carriers. In Emeryville, businesses can utilize private fiber links, dark fiber services, as well as a host of private Ethernet and high speed Internet services. EmeryConnect eliminates barriers to entry for Internet providers and carriers enabling ultra-high-speed symmetric connectivity to all residential and business users. More than just creating network neutrality, our open access network showcases the opportunities and benefits of fiber optic networks, encouraging the highest levels of service and competition.* http://emeryconnect.com/n-about-us/open-access/ -Pete [[User:Peteforsyth]]

Server Room Update July 21, 2014: Donation via Chris, Screws + Cage Nuts + Server Rack Status

by Somebody

Hello All, Just we all know: DONATION RECEIVED: We have received a donation of 2 Two Post Racks. Thanks Chris!! The donation easily saved us about 400 dollars. We only needed one for production, but Jeremy and I already have discussed how we can use the second one (training for those who would like to learn how to reset passwords, erase config files, and or do OS upgrade on the spare Cisco Switches that we have. :) -Oh yeah... we couldn't wait and installed a couple of switches on one of the racks! :) SCREWS AND CAGE NUTS: Anyhow: for those that know how messy can get with having the wrong kind of screws and cage nuts: We have narrow it down to have the donated racks tread as a model to use for the Server Rack square holes. So when we trying to install a switch or rack mount server/device we won't go bunkers trying to figure out what screws should be use. The screws we are using are 12-24. SERVER RACK STATUS: And talking about the Server Rack.... Last Friday I checked with the Vendor and I am glad I did. There was some wrong info in the billing part of the order, it did get corrected then. So now that detail got cleared up, the estimate shipping date is August 16. Yes, until then since this is a back-order. Thanks! Daniel

Docker kernel modules

by Max B

Hey Team, So it looks like Docker won't be able to load kernel modules that aren't included on the host system. For a bit more info: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/16047306/how-is-docker-io-different-from… http://www.scriptrock.com/articles/docker-vs-vagrant http://stackoverflow.com/questions/16647069/should-i-use-vagrant-or-docker-… So that being said, we still have some options. One might be to migrate entirely to a virtual machine platform. Vagrant seems to be the tool of choice here. What seems like a potentially better choice is to run Docker inside of Vagrant. I know this is starting to seem like a game of those Russian nesting dolls, but we'd be able to pick the Debian distro we prefer and start it with Vagrant, and then do the rest of the configuration with a Dockerfile. I'm still looking into the options - if anyone else has ideas they'd like to share, I'd love to hear. Max

Act Immediately to Stop Congress’s Sneaky Move to Shut Down Broadband Competition

by Mitar

Hi! This is important, we have to mobilize: Representative Marsha Blackburn introduced an amendment late last night that aims to limit FCC authority to preempt state laws that restrict or prohibit municipal and community high-speed Internet projects or investment. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2014/07/act-immediately-stop-congresss-sneaky… Mitar -- http://mitar.tnode.com/ https://twitter.com/mitar_m

NPR show on SF free wifi, and the importance of wireless networks

by Pete Forsyth

Hi all, This aired on KALW this morning (even though the web page seems to indicate it was published last month): http://kalw.org/post/who-s-using-san-francisco-wifi Interesting piece, interviews with EFF, talks about disaster response, self-sufficiency, whether/how city governments should support free wireless, etc. Worth a listen. Mesh meetings this week without internets!

by Max B

Hey folks, I'm kind of thinking that we should come up with a strategy for our meetings this week since it looks like sudoroom may not have internet until next week. One option might be a mobile hotspot sort of solution, but I'm not sure that'll provide effective access for all of us. Another might be to migrate elsewhere. Ideally it would be somewhere close to sudo so that if folks show up there, they'd easily be able to come over. Arbor cafe is only open until 7, and unfortunately it doesn't look like temescal is particularly rich with late night wifi. There aren't a ton of places with wifi that are open late it turns out! The one that I found was Gaylord's Caffe Espresso: https://plus.google.com/100504651877741535888/about 4150 Piedmont Ave They're open until midnight tonight and thursday, but it's a little far from sudo (about a mile). Thoughts? Max
