Re: [Mesh] [sudo-discuss] Can someone please donate Cat6 Shielded cable?

by max b

Hey Charley, You're more than welcome to donate money (or time) if that's more up your alley. Also, if you want to donate UTP cat6, we'll take that as well. We use a bunch of ethernet cable both at the omni and for other installations, so we can always use more. If you're feeling really generous, we can really use shielded outdoor cat5 and cat6 for installing antennas. Don't worry - no matter what kind of ethernet cabling you feel like donating, we can almost certainly find a use for it :) As for the questions you've outlined: First thing: shielded cable This isn't actually an ethernet run. It's dsl lines + phone lines running over cat copper wires. As such, it's my understanding that it's more sensitive to EMI disturbance. Additionally, it's much better to err on the safe side as we'll only want to string this once and the entire network communications infrastructure depends on the dsl signal that passes through this line. As for needing shielded mating jacks, we have plenty of grounded rj-45 connectors and with whatever other scenarios, it's pretty easy to ensure that they're grounded. We're not talking about our entire network infrastructure, we're just talking about this one cable run. Second thing: hand termination We're using an EZ RJ-45 crimper, which makes the process fairly straightforward. We have spools of other types of ethernet cables and have done runs throughout the building. Also - we'll be breaking out these pairs anyhow, so most of this is fairly non standard types of termination which are much easier than rj-45 disconnects. Daniel, let us know if I missed anything here? Anyone want a PicoStation2?

by Steve Berl

Cleaning my garage I came across a Ubiquiti PicoStation2 HP. I got this from the mesh group once upon a time because I thought I was going to help with development, but things got in the way and that never really happened. It's still in the box with antenna, power cord and POE adapter. Do you folks what it back, or is it eWaste? I can drop it my this evening or some other time that is convenient. -- -steve

preferred router

by Morgan Allen

I've checked the wiki a couple times but cannot seem to find the answer I'm after... curious what the current best option for both a mesh and home use router would be. I've been running OpenWRT on a WRT54G for years but it just cannot keep up any more and has zero space available. Basically I need something that meets the needs for the mesh network and has a built in switch/multiple ethernet ports. Shielded Cat6 has been ordered (thanks to Charley) and "theoretically" will be delivered to his place on Friday. Charley is bringing it to Sudoroom on Saturday. Nice! Mesh Brochure

by nicolas weidinger

Hi Team, The mesh brochure is all finished up. All of the files are uploaded here: https://counterculturelabs.org/owncloud/index.php/apps/files/?dir=/Mesh%20B… It includes: - printable PDF (print double sided and fold it in thirds for best results) - SVG files for each graphic in the brochure, for making videos, etc. - Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop files if anyone wants to edit the original I just requested a Wiki account. Will update with new content as soon as the account is approved. There are also a dozen brochures printed out in the sticker bin. Onward!

Can someone please donate Cat6 Shielded cable?

by danarauz＠gmail.com

Hello Sudoers-Meshers: We are having Omni work parties for the last three Saturdays, and we have postpone the wiring run from the point of entry to the Server area, only because we don't have the cable. This line brings the phone+Internet to the omni itself. Guestimating the run is about 70' long. But, if we can get a box of 500' or 1000' would be awesome, so that the rest can be used by the Sudomesh projects as well. Can someone help us out? If we get it by Saturday, I volunteer myself to do this job on Saturday as part of the work party.
