Hardware and softWEAR* Hacking Tuesday is tonight

by Jake

Hi everyone, You're getting this email either because 1) you're on the sudoroom discuss email list, or 2) because I BCC'd you directly. Tonight I'll be hosting Sudoroom for those who want to come hack on whatever, in person, or through telepresence (see the last link in this email) ALSO NOW FEATURING: SoftWEAR hacking too: most Tuesday evenings the sewing area at Omni Commons (in the basement) is also active so bring your fabric and textile projects and technical repairs; we've got heavy duty and serger sewing machines available. You're also welcome to bring your own machine to have it checked out and tuned up for tip-top operation or to just sew alongside others. in the past few weeks, we've had about 5-15 people over the course of the evening, not including remote participants who logged in through telepresence Jenny put it on the Omni calendar: https://omnicommons.org/blog/events/hardware-hack-night-3-2022-03-01/ Here it is on the sudoroom page: https://sudoroom.org/events/hardware-hack-night-2022-02-15/ that says 7PM but I try to be there earlier. if you get to the door (at the corner of 48th and shattuck) and you can't get in, call me or someone else who's there to let you in! Email me if you don't have my phone number. Actually a great way to get our attention is to join the video chat link at the end of this email! We don't always hear the doorbell and I don't answer it anyway! You should get on this sudoroom discuss mailinglist! click here: https://sudoroom.org/lists/postorius/lists/sudo-discuss.sudoroom.org/ and you should donate monthly to sudoroom, monthly, by signing up here: https://sudoroom.org/humans and if you want to make a one-time donation, you can go here: https://sudoroom.org/donate if you can't make it in person: join the jitsi videochat with the room, and chat with each other as well as a giant TV screen/speakerphone on the wall: https://meet.waag.org/turtlesturtlesturtles (don't worry if you're the only one in the "room", others will join eventually, and if the camera is pointed at the floor, just yell until someone comes and talks to you and then ask them to aim it back up into the room) see you soon! -jake

Install monitor in Omni entrance hall

by Z Silver Zahn

Hey y’all, Tomorrow I’m looking for support to mount a TV in the entrance hall that can link to our live calendar so everyone that domes through can see what rooms are or aren’t available for the month. Or even just general classes they can pop into like hardware hacking Tuesdays. Can anyone help with this?

This printer copier scanner thing doesn't do anything but say it wants blue ink. If nobody wants to buy it blue ink we should throw it out, unless someone wants to adopt it? -jake

Hackerspace Visit

by Andromeda Martian

Hey there! I'm Ana and I'm on a vacation in the Bay Area until the 25th. I'm thinking about spending time at SudoRoom every now and then, especially to learn more about the SudoMesh project. I tried finding something akin to README.MD on the project's Github but I couldn't find it, so maybe I'll just hang out at the Sudo lair :D ..I'd like to come to the hardware hack night next week, but today I have dinner around those times. If I ring the door at any time of the day, any day, how likely is there to be a member who can open it for me? Is there a chat room dedicated to SudoMesh project? Thanks! Ana

Fwd: [Mesh] Re: Re: [omni-events] changing our internet to Monkeybrains

-------- Forwarded Message -------- Subject: Re: [Mesh] Re: [sudo-discuss] Re: [omni-events] changing our internet to Monkeybrains Date: Mon, 13 Feb 2023 08:03:24 -0800 From: Jenny Ryan <jenny(a)peoplesopen.net> To: mesh(a)sudoroom.org From a mounted mast, we can't hit anything north of the 24/580 bridge iirc LMI is preferred due to being solar-powered. They have the same reseller/sharing terms as Sonic. Monkeybrains would be cool if we can get it :) Omni is unfortunately surrounded by highways and condos, hence not being the hub of WiFi we'd love it to be... changing our internet to Monkeybrains

by Jake

I talked with Monkeybrains and apparently we can get internet from them! It will be much better than what we have now, and our politics and goals are very aligned. from their website: https://www.monkeybrains.net/ "Monkeybrains is a San Francisco based ISP founded by Rudy Rucker and Alex Menendez in 1998. With their crew of like-minded renegades, these two are bringing affordable, hassle-free, month-to-month internet service to the residents and businesses of San Francisco. Monkeybrains customers appreciate our incredible speed-to-cost ratio and our ability to install quickly, with minimal wait time from lead to install. In the late 90's Monkeybrains started out as a dial-up ISP running out of a warehouse in San Francisco. We ran the whole thing with a few desktop computers connected to a bunch of modems. In the early 2000s we moved operations to the datacenter and began offering web hosting and collocation services. In 2009 Monkeybrains dramatically expanded the ISP by offering wireless Internet access. We have come a long way since those dial-up days! Monkeybrains now operates a hybrid network of fiber optic and high capacity wireless links servicing over 20,000 locations with over 100 new locations coming online every week. With every installation, we push the limits of available technology and over-deliver bandwidth. We took this approach during a recent campaign where Monkeybrains delivered 300Mbps+ to approved residents of San Francisco using equipment only previously seen on commercial buildings. Our focus within San Francisco has enabled us to have a personal relationship with the individuals, businesses and communities we serve. In addition to our personal approach to service and support, Monkeybrains takes a progressive stance on Net Neutrality and we believe the Internet should be secure, unbiased and available to all! View our customer map to see if we are available in your area." Does anyone know who we have internet service with now, how much we pay, and whether there's a penalty for cancelling after we get service with Monkeybrains? Does anyone have questions or objections to Omni switching over? -jake

Change to the meeting schedule!

by Andrew R Gross

Hey folks! At a recent meeting we agreed to change the meeting schedule back to how it used to be: now, general meetings are on the first Wednesday of each month, and all other Wednesdays are parties. You can still bring up any business at a party, but the change is meant to allow people to know which meetings are likely to be most active. I will be at Sudoroom for tonight‘s party and encourage anyone to stop by in person or online. The next real meeting will be the first Wednesday of March. The agenda for tonight‘s party is hang out and share projects, and discuss a new calendar plug-in I’m testing. If you wanna add anything else this agenda, reply below! Here is the calendar I’m testing. The big differences are that it’s much easier to make events in this plug-in, and anyone can sync the calendar to Google calendars or icalendar. Thoughts?
