Sudoers, Does anyone know the process and equipment needed to do music mashing? I'd really like to learn what it takes--likely more than just Audacity, right? Is there a Today I learned... not yet on the calendar? Thanks. judi

Raman making for monday night - The Public School's Summer School Food Night

by Raymond Lai

Hey Sudoers, Call me cuckoo but I want to make ramen noodles for Public School's monday night dinner. It's the start of their Summer School. I am wondering if anyone has a kitchen aide or other mixer with a dough hook? Also I need a pasta maker since hand pulled noodles might be a bit beyond my skill given the time frame. RAMEN!!! Fwd: Circuit Bending for Music by Sudo Room x RPSC x MCO?

by Jenny Ryan

Any circuit benders in the house? This looks like fun! Forwarded from info(a)sudoroom.org: --------------- Hey all! Ara here from Rock Paper Scissors Collective! I hope you're enjoying the sandwich board; we're loving the lil Netbook over here! On behalf of the upcoming Mission Creek Oakland Music and Arts Festival ( www.mcofest.org), organizer Kiyomi Tanouye and I were thinking to include fellow local community organizations to publicize during the MCO campaign of opportunities to learn methods of making art and music. The festival is throughout the month of September, publicized and sponsored by the East Bay Express. If any of the talented and knowledgeable at Sudo Room were interested in hosting or coming over to RPSC to teach circuit bending tricks, we'd be happy to plug Sudo Room into the campaign! The projected date of the workshop is Sunday, September 8th. Hope you hear from you all soon! --Ara [ara(a)rpscollective.org] Gallery/Events Director

Elcano: An Open Source Ultralight Automated Vehicle

by Jenny Ryan

Forwarded from info@sudoroom.org:* * *--------------------- Automation is gathering momentum, but implementation may shortchange<http://www.rockethub.com/projects/28761-elcano-open-source-autonomous-vehic…> society<http://www.rockethub.com/projects/28761-elcano-open-source-autonomous-vehic…> . * Vehicle automation is too important to leave to the big companies, so Jigsaw Renaissance <http://www.jigsawrenaissance.org/> is putting together a low-cost electronics and software kit that will open selfdrive for DIY experimentation. All contributions are appreciated. Can you help us out either financially or technically? The RocketHub crowdfunding campaign lasts until Monday, August 30, so we have less than 2 weeks for our Popular Science #Crowdgrant<http://www.rockethub.com/projects/partner/popularscience> to fund production of printed circuit boards: http://bit.ly/DIYRobotKits <http://www.rockethub.com/projects/28761-elcano-open-source-autonomous-vehic…> We are working on implementing our kit into a self-driving vehicle prototype that includes the vehicle, electronics, servos and actuators. One of the goal is to keep the cost down to under $5,000. Our kit will also fit on an RC car, which saves $2,000 on vehicle cost and $500 on actuators. The prototype is a drive-by-wire recumbent tricycle: legally a bicycle, so no hassle with the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). And yes, all of our work is open source including the softwares and the electronics schematics. We’re extremely excited about the release of our kits and hope you can help us spread the word. A sustained presence online will propel us well past our intended goal. Please forward this link. Support the project by backing it, tweeting about it (follow our @ElcanoProject<https://twitter.com/ElcanoProject> twitter account), and even blogging about it. We want our platform to be as robust as possible, so your feedback would be awesome. We're happy to answer any questions people might have. The more questions you ask, the better our answers can be! You can look at the current iteration on www.elcanoproject.org. We recently showed our first vehicle at the Stanford workshop on road vehicle automation (http://www.vehicleautomation.org). A second vehicle is being assembled at the University of Washington, Bothell, and will be the focus of a student project: http://blogs.uw.edu/cssuwb/projects/elcano2/ Our electronics system runs on Arduino microprocessors robustly mounted on custom printed circuit boards. We have already built the low level control module, which isolates vehicle specific functions. We are working on the high level module, which combines three separate processors to find current location, plot a path to the destination, and feed the next path segment (avoiding obstacles) to lowlevel control. We also have a design for a module of five sonar range finders. Future modules will handle the operator interface and connect to a PC based simulator. You are welcome to subscribe to the project update: http://fb.me/6qUFeMLZN Feel free to contact us at info(a)ElcanoProject.org with any questions or just to say hello. Thank you! Interested in working with teens?

by Jenny Ryan

Hey Sudoers! We've had a surge of young people coming by the space who're learning to program (including interest in collaboration from the Oakland Public Library TeenZones, below), and it would be awesome to start a youth programming meetup. Anyone interested in working with teens and teaching programming? Most likely they would self-organize and help each other learn, so it would really be more a matter of holding the space, setting up some communication channels and showing up on a regular basis :) Alt ideas for collaboration welcome and encouraged! Cheers, Jenny * --- forwarded message --- * Wed Aug 07 2013 09:23:17 AM PDT from "Austin, Jeanie" < JAustin(a)oaklandlibrary.org> Subject: Possible collaboration with Oakland Public Library Teen Zones? Hello - I am a teen librarian with the Oakland Public library. We've recently had some discussions around makerspaces and teen programming. Would anyone associated with sudoroom be interested in providing some programs or meeting to discuss ways that there can be a collaboration between the TeenZones and sudoroom? Thank you for your time, Jeanie Austin Teen Librarian Asian Branch Oakland Public Library

Announcing SUMMER SCHOOL 2013 + CALL for Sudo Room Participation ! [from your friends at the Public School!]

by DZ Brazil

Dear Sudo Folks : My name is David Brazil -- I work with the Bay Area Public School -- & I am psyched to announce that the School will be putting on SUMMER SCHOOL 2013 from August 26 through September 1 at the 2141 Broadway space. (Save the dates!) SUMMER SCHOOL is the second installment of a project that began in 2012 -- it's a week-long extravaganza of events, talks, performances, and free food. Each day is convened around "Studying" a certain subject or theme -- to wit : mon.: studying food. tue. : studying bodies. wed. : studying language. thu. studying crisis. fri. studying race. sat. studying information. sun. studying studying (a daylong session on education). We're particularly excited to make SUMMER SCHOOL an occasion for Public School / Sudo Room crossover, & we had the idea to invite folks from Sudo to propose short talks or presentations for the day on 'information' (considered very broadly). We envision the program running from 12noon to 6pm, and breaking down into three 2-hour segments, loosely organized around topics. Subjects could include anything from classes on math, science & computing to the politics of cryptography, projects for an alternative internet, -- really, anything you'd like a lot of people to hear about ! The Public School is so glad to be neighbors with Sudo Room & we really want the SUMMER SCHOOL to be an occasion for us all to work together on an exciting project. If you are interested in participating, or if you have any questions, please write me direct at dzbrazil(a)yahoo.com. Lastly, we will be having weekly planning meetings at 2141, every Thursday at 6pm, from now until August 26 -- so if you are interested in helping plan and organize the school, please come by ! Hope this finds everyone very well -- Love -- David
