YAY for JENNY!! (Thanks from Timon WAS Re: Conflict resolution item for Wednesday meeting)

Thanks so much for disambiguating! With this additional knowledge, I'm happy to be removed from the agenda again. Conflict resolution item for Wednesday meeting

by Timon

Since I'll be at the meeting, that will be a convenient time to have me arrested, if anyone wishes. -------- Original Message -------- Subject: RE: Expulsion from common area Date: Mon, 9 Dec 2013 00:08:53 -0800 From: Laurie Cooperman Rosen <Lscoop(a)comcast.net> To: 'Timon' <timondocent(a)gmail.com> p.s. the police came, but we thought it had been cancelled. They were called because Matt said that you were bothering people, not because George said that you can't be in there. Matt called us, we didn't call him. Neither George nor I was privy to what led up to his call. Sonitrol called the police and gave them Matt's #. The Police called Matt and Matt said that you had left the room and that they didn't need to come, so we thought it was done. An hour later we got a call from Matt; they showed up anyway and George had to run down there. Not what we wanted on a Sunday eve. L -----Original Message----- From: Timon [mailto:timondocent@gmail.com] Sent: Sunday, December 08, 2013 10:54 PM To: Laurie Cooperman Rosen Subject: Expulsion from common area On Friday night after we talked (sometime after 6:15PM, when he'd required me to take his appointment), or perhaps between when I made my Monday appointment with you yesterday (Saturday) afternoon and when I got back from my volunteer/internship gig at about 6pm, George seems to have decided my alleged "second chance" (as in "everyone deserves a second chance") was retroactively canceled, and told people I was "not allowed" in the building. After Sudo (Matt) asked me yesterday -- because of some direct communication from George I do not know about (between 1:45PM and 6ish PM) not to be in the Sudo room part of the common area yesterday night, and out of respect for not wanting to put sudo room (the group: my friends and colleagues, acquaintances and primary social millieu and support) in a difficult place, I retrieved a few possessions and donations and then left both sudo room's room and their common area section, and have not returned, as I told everyone I would not. Tonight, as I was peacefully eating my dinner and listening to a good physics and game-theory lecture/conversation from OUTSIDE of the Sudo area today, Matt handed me a phone, and said it was George. (I told George I was recording it, mid-call, and he did not voice objection). Per George, Matt had asked that I be required to leave. After George hung up on me, saying he'd called the cops and would not "repeat himself " as I asked for clarification, I found out the request didn't come from George. I will not be in the common area, unless invited by The Public School, until we talk. I doubt I would even if so invited, out of respect for anyone else who should be spared this drama. Feel free to cancel the call to the cops or not, as you see fit. -Timon

Fwd: [!SUDO-INFO!] Event with FWD

by Matthew Senate

Hey all, This email came in, we weren't sure what to do, discussed at the meeting that we'd forward to the discuss list to see if anyone wanted to follow up about this. From the minutes: "**we'll forward to sudo-discuss, any interested individual sudoer is free to invite them as a guest on the calendar, but we will be very clear that our org is not endorsing theirs" ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Kendra Desler <kendra(a)fwd.us> Date: Wed, Dec 4, 2013 at 2:50 PM Subject: [!SUDO-INFO!] Event with FWD To: info(a)sudoroom.org Hey Sudoroom! My name is Kendra Desler, and I am an Organizing Fellow with FWD.us. We are a nonprofit advocacy organization working with the tech community to move the knowledge economy forward through immigration reform. I was wondering if Sudoroom would be interested in having FWD.us host a mixer event at your office space in hopes of meeting your members and sharing about how immigration reform affects the tech community. We often host happy hour type events during the late afternoon; however, we are flexible, and can host something more common to the your office culture (brunch, sandwich lunch, etc). We will provide all food, beverages and other amenities. Would you be open to exploring the possibility of having us host such an event? I look forward to hearing from you! Timon Not Allowed in Building

by mattsenate＠gmail.com

Hey all, I received word from George our landlord that Timon is banned from the property. His presence in sudo room jeopardizes our lease, and therefore he is not welcome. This has been communicated to Timon, and some other sudoers who were around this weekend are aware as well. // Matt

Reminder: "Battle for Oscar Grant Plaza" documentary screening today, 3-5pm!

by Jenny Ryan

Hey sudo! This afternoon starting at 3pm: Short documentary screening: “The Battle for Oscar Grant Plaza” by Jacob Crawford and co-produced by Dave Id, Indybay.org. The documentary shows how the City of Oakland and its Police tried to shut down the budding “Occupy Wall Street” movement, turning downtown Oakland into a teargas filled war zone and injuring numerous people. Police video obtained in discovery in the National Lawyers Guild’s successful lawsuit and interviews with activists and journalists about their experiences, tell the real story of the disastrous Fall 2011 police actions that pushed the troubled OPD to the brink of federal receivership. Documentary (in it’s current state) is 25 minutes and will start around 3:15. Expect light refreshments and intellectual discourse! We’re interested in sparking conversation around police accountability in the Oakland area and beyond. If you have any interest in direct involvement with OPD accountability (especially if you are a coder!), you won’t want to miss this! The producers and some plaintiffs (including Scott Olsen) will be present to answer any questions. Jacob Crawford is a long time Copwatcher based out of the Bay Area in California. He joined Berkeley Copwatch <http://www.berkeleycopwatch.org/>in 2000 and produced the first ever “in the streets” non-dramatized know your rights video “These Streets Are Watching”. He currently is running WeCopwatch.org <http://wecopwatch.org> with other Copwatchers and has been a contributor for CopBlock.org <http://copblock.org> for several years. ---------- Jenny http://jennyryan.net http://thepyre.org http://thevirtualcampfire.org http://technomadic.tumblr.com `~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~` "Technology is the campfire around which we tell our stories." -Laurie Anderson "Storytelling reveals meaning without committing the error of defining it." -Hannah Arendt "To define is to kill. Fwd: Invest in Bay Area Youth This Holiday Season!

by Romy Ilano

I promise I'm not going to forward too many of these newsletters to sudo-discuss... but this is a very worthwhile non-project in Oakland. Mind Body Awareness enables youth (often involved in gangs, violence) to reach a healthier mental state through meditation. Their program sounds very nonjudgemental and takes a different perspective on solving such problems.. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Mind Body Awareness Project <info(a)mbaproject.org> Date: Sun, Dec 8, 2013 at 9:59 AM Subject: Invest in Bay Area Youth This Holiday Season! The Mind Body Awareness (MBA) Project brings practical mindfulness and emotional regulation training to youth in juvenile detention centers and public high schools; approaching transformation from the inside out. We want to share with you one such story of transformation, the kind of story that keeps us in it for the long haul: * Raymond (pseudonym), a 16-year old gang member was introduced to a loving kindness meditation in one of our classes. In this meditation we repeat to ourselves “May I be happy … May I be healthy … May I be safe…” As the meditation was coming to a close Raymond jolted abruptly out of the practice. When we asked Raymond if he was ok, he told us: "I just had a vision. I could see myself right there. When I said to myself 'May I be happy,' I could see myself as a little kid, playing with toys and blocks. Just happy you know? Then, when I said to myself, 'May I be healthy,' I could see myself on my block in my neighborhood. I was holding a joint (marijuana) and I just took it and threw it behind me and left. And then, when I said to myself, 'May I be safe,' I could see myself on my block again. But this time I had my gun in my belt. I just took the gun and threw it in the garbage and walked away. That was deep." Raymond attended our class for over 2 years while incarcerated in the maximum-security unit in the Alameda County Juvenile Justice Center. That experience changed him at a root level. He’s since reported thinking less violent thoughts and continued on as a leader in our program, facilitating group meditations, bringing more friends each time.* As we approach the holidays, we invite you to help us support more youth like Raymond. - $100 supports one youth receiving 3 one-on-one counseling sessions - $250 supports one youth attending a 3-day, 2-night residential meditation retreat - $500 supports one youth to participate in our 10-module programs in the a juvenile hall - $1,000 supports one youth to go through a yearlong MBA high school class - $5,000 supports a yearlong training for one MBA instructor Our goal is to raise $15,000 by December 31st, and we are just getting started. *To help us get there, an anonymous donor has stepped up and offered us a $7,500 challenge grant! *That’s right, the next $7,500 we receive will be matched, dollar for dollar! Please consider contributing to this match fund today! Need a holiday gift idea? Dedicate a contribution in the name of someone special and we will notify him or her by email of your gift.
