Hi Hol,
that's a really neat welder! If you want to tune it up and make it work
better, you might want to replace the tube that the wire gets pushed
through. When it develops friction, the drive wheel can't push the wire
through reliably.
Fortunately the tube can be replaced with bicycle brake cable! Just get
some of the good stuff (teflon lined) from a bike shop, and razor off the
rubber coating so it fits in place of the original hose. The welder will
work better than new!
As for the flux-core wire, it is very dangerous to use that indoors,
because the flux is for preventing oxidation - and our lungs need to
oxidize! So it should never be used indoors (and using it outdoors will
require a shield so passersby don't see the arc)
At some point we should talk about making a ventilated corner of sudoroom,
where welding and other fume-producing tasks can take place. Hell, maybe
the Robot will be welding by then.

i brought in a small wirefeed welder. it uses fluxcore wire so doesn't
require a shield gas, just turn it on, clamp the ground to your work,
point and click. the wheel that drives the wire from the box through the
cable to the gun doesn't have very good traction, so check there if the
wire doesn't feed. the welder uses 17 amps so only use directly plugged
into an outlet (!!!)
bring steel! the antique saw actually works really well for cutting
stock down to size
Thanks for documenting whats happening w the Robot, Jake. Its like a little movie script in my mind. :)

omg i think i figured out what's wrong
it's not throwing errors for servos 1 and 2 of the robot, it's referring
to the two motors that are not connected, they were part of the assembly
line. We actually have the controllers for both, they were in that huge
metal box I put on the curb (after taking them out) but we only have one
of the motors and anyway...
on page 28 of http://servo-repair.com/documents/yaskawa/CACR-SR.pdf
(labeled page 23 in the document) it shows the pins of the connector for
the errors we're getting.
I think if i short the right pins on the connectors, the errors will go
away and it will think the two missing servo controllers are happy, even
though we don't actually want to hook them up to anything.
unfortunately, reconfiguring the ERC controller to know that it doesn't
have two extra motors would require changing the EPROM, and even if we had
a ROM burner handy I wouldn't know what to change.
Does anyone want to play with the robot arm?

whoa... the encoders are serial? I guess there's a lot of stuff in there.
the pinout is on page 26 but look on page 31:
http://servo-repair.com/documents/yaskawa/CACR-SR.pdf
apparently the encoders power on, and report their absolute position with
a serial data packet, and then they switch over to quadrature to report
movement pulses. Maybe this is why the pinout includes "battery" and
there is supposed to be a battery to allow the encoders to "remember"
where they were before?
i guess if we fix the battery, and fix whatever loose wires are causing
servos 1 and 2 to not pass tests, then it will probably work.

There are more Yaskawa documents here:
http://servo-repair.com/documents.php
The robot was made by Yaskawa which is now know as Motoman (subsidiary
of Yaskawa). However, it seems like Yaskawa does not put any
documentation about this on their website. I don't know who made the
encoder but I think it might be Stegmann.

Subject: [sfchalkboard] DEEP WEBSITE HELP
To: sfchalkboard <sfchalkboard(a)lists.riseup.net>
Hi Chalkeristas/istos--
HELP! I am an artist doing complicated social projects and I need a web
presence that makes sense. For instance, I am starting an alternative
credit rating bureau, starting with one experimental loan to one person. It
feels important to have a good way to communicate about this. I am not sure
where to start, what to ask or search for, or how to value it.
I have a small amount of money from a grant to work with, and I'm happy to
do a money thing or a trade thing, and I'd even just be happy to get some
advice.
Thanks a million!

I don't normally post a lot of stuff on international tech politics to
hackerspace lists, but I think it's worth generating a conversation around
this. My friends from Russia have been describing Putin's insane
environment of fearmongering and national media control and censorship.
This article talks effectively a national walled garden.

How do you fight this?
A totally badass and very knowledgeable and kind friend of mine is
co-hosting this event. I'll be there...come with me! :] Here's some info:
[[August 17th, 2pm @ LOL 1234 23rd Avenue]]
"come kickit with some great folks at a hands-on radical digital mapping
workshop!
we'll be mapping data sets about (1) charter schools replacing public
schools in oakland, (2) payouts & settlements from OPD police brutality,
and (3) foreclosures in the bay. good practice to learn how to make an
engaging digital map to illustrate whatever struggles you might be in."
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS!!!
The AMP Zine deadline is August 18th by email or postmarked by August 15th!
The Anti-Eviction Mapping Project is making a zine! The zine is part of the
Narratives of Displacement project and aims to share individual and
community stories, thoughts and feelings surrounding the gentrification of San
Francisco and the Bay Area and the resulting flood of evictions.
Reflections on home, community and displacement are welcome.
Be creative! Entries can be as small as one word or a tiny doodle, and up
to 800 words. Potential submission formats include: poem, short story,
essay, thought, doodle, sketch, painting, comic, print, stamp, quote, joke,
collage, pretty much anything you can or cannot think of.
The zine is open to anyone who has something to express related to these
issues, but we would especially love to see contributions from folks who
have been personally impacted in one way or another by gentrification
and/or displacement.
Please specify if you would like to remain anonymous. Otherwise we would
love to credit you for your work in the zine. We will not edit submissions,
but we do have a particular political and artistic vision for the zine that
some pieces may not fit into. However, our goal is to be as open and
accessible as possible, especially as a platform for typically marginalized
voices and stories.
Questions and submissions can be sent to ampzine(a)riseup.net and/or
Anti-Eviction Mapping Project, 558 Capp Street, SF, CA, 94110.

Some background on AMP, from our website:
The Anti-Eviction Mapping Project is a data-visualization, data analysis,
and digital storytelling collective documenting the dispossession of San
Francisco Bay Area residents. The project seeks to de-isolate those
displaced and act as a tool for collective resistance.
We use maps and digital storytelling to make the often invisible processes
of eviction, displacement and gentrification clearly seen.
We have released multiple maps, including our:
- Eviction Pledge Map, where you can look up an address to determine its
eviction history, and pledge never to rent or buy from a landlord or
speculator who has profited off of displacement.
- Our Crowdsourced Map of Loss and Displacement, where you can share your
story, photo, of video on a geolocation platform, and add to the map.
- Time-lapse maps of Ellis Act Evictions and all No-Fault Evictions that
have taken place since 1997. We have also mapped evictions of seniors and
people with disabilities over the last three years, with information about
the landlords and speculators who have displaced them.
- Map of serial evictions.
- Map of income inequality.
- Map of no-fault evictions surrounding tech bus stops.
- And more!

Hi Johanna, thanks for replying. I have not read the other emails from you regarding this topic, but I wanted to let you know that someone (forgot his name) volunteered to be there this AM.
Thanj you again for checking in.
