*About Hack the Network:*
This project is aimed at connecting qualified candidates from
underrepresented groups with job opportunities in tech and tech-related
companies. The goal is to use my networks to upend the current networked
hiring system, by tapping into pools of talent that people in tech don't
normally have access to.
*Here's how it works*:
1. Check out the jobs below. I’ve included links to their application
pages and if you like you can apply to them directly.
2. However, if you feel strongly that you are a good fit for the
position and would like a referral, send me your resume (even if you have
already sent it) with your name, the job title, and the employer in the
subject line.
3. If it looks like you are what the employer is looking for, I’ll email
you to schedule a quick skype call.
4. If we both want to proceed after that discussion, then I will refer
you to my friend to follow on with the application process.
I can’t guarantee that this process will land you a job. However, you’ll
likely stand a better chance than with just a cold contact. Also, I don't
post all of the positions that HTN companies are seeking to fill. So, if
you see a position of interest posted on an HTN company website which is
not in the newsletter, let me know. Please feel free to share this with
friends who are looking for work, potential employers, or organizations
which you think would be interested.
If tech is the future, we should have a seat at the table.

hello fellow sudoers!
I wish I could be around sudo/omni more but i am so busy/inundated with
bookselling crap! On that tip:
would anyone be interested in helping me make a simple website?
also, I need someone to help me learn filemaker pro (or something similar,
theres something expensive called bookhound that i've heard is good but
pricey,) so that I can (ideally) create a single inventory of my rare books
and use that to upload onto both my website and amazon.com (or abebooks.com)
with the same file.... I think this is possible?! This would be book info,
price and in some cases, images.
basically i'm looking for someone to help me get started online! If you can
help, plz let me know! I have a little bit of $ to pay for this and would
definitely try to compensate you the best I can!
Blessings,
Scott

In other words, it's bad but not much worse than when we first moved
into the building. We've come so far since then, and we've got so much
more time to do this right. And a fortune already in the bank to start
with. :)
Every new day is a gift. Let's celebrate this time we have together
and try our best to make it last.
My biggest takeaway from Becoming Omni was that we need more
communication across the board. So I am going to try to work on just
documenting all the things I've been meaning to do but lack the
capacity to do myself. And we need to empower new people to take on
stuff like that.

Celebrating Open Access
<https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2015/10/open-access-week-2015>
Open access is the practice of making research and other materials freely
available online, ideally under licenses that permit widespread
dissemination. Open access publishing plays a huge role in the spread of
knowledge, culture, and ideas. To celebrate Open Access Week, we wrote a
series of blog posts exploring about how open access is a powerful tool for
researchers and the general public.
When You Work in the Open, Everyone Can Be a Collaborator
<https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2015/10/when-you-work-open-everyone-can-be-co…>
Open access opens the door to a type of collaboration that wouldn’t exist
otherwise.
FASTR Ensures that Publicly Funded Research Belongs to the Public
<https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2015/10/fastr-ensures-publicly-funded-researc…>
When taxpayers pay for research, everyone should have access to it.
How Trade Agreements Harm Open Access and Open Source
<https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2015/10/how-trade-agreements-harm-open-access…>
We should hardly be surprised that trade agreements are bad news for open
access and open source. But neither should we accept it.
Open Access Is a Human Rights Issue
<https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2015/10/open-access-human-rights-issue>
It’s sometimes easy to forget what’s really at stake. At its heart, open
access isn’t an abstract, academic debate.
Save Crypto <https://savecrypto.org/?r=eff>
Some legislators want to force major tech companies to include special
backdoors in their products, so that the government can access our
communications. We've launched a campaign to pressure President Obama to
reject these proposals and affirm his support for strong encryption, and
he's promised to respond to any petition through the We the People tool
that gets at least 100,000 signatures. More than 90,000 people have already
signed. Can you help us close the gap <https://savecrypto.org/?r=eff>?

Apple's EULA Gives It License to Invade Your Privacy, Government Claims
<https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2015/10/apples-eula-gives-it-license-invade-y…>
When you buy a book, the government can’t demand the publisher or bookstore
turn over the notes you’ve written in the margins. But in a case in the
United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York, the
government is currently arguing that the way Apple licenses its software to
users means that people don’t actually own their copy of code that powers
their iPhones, and thus the company can be ordered to bypass the lock
screen in order to get at data on those users’ devices.

The mayor of Sacramento, former basketball star Kevin Johnson, is currently
suing the city’s alt weekly to stop reporters from obtaining emails that
may, or may not, reveal improprieties in his office. The case represents an
intersection of two key issues for EFF: transparency and freedom of the
press.

Our campaign to encrypt the Web took a major step forward this week. The
Let's Encrypt Certificate Authority—which we've been building in
collaboration with teams at Mozilla, ISRG, and others—received a
cross-signature from IdenTrust. As a result, Let's Encrypt certificates are
now valid and trusted by all modern Web browsers. You can see our very

Censorship at ICANN

intellectual property lobbyists intent on stacking every committee. Now the
stakes are higher than ever. Will the ICANN of the future be a place that
represents Internet users or just special interests?

i attended the finance wg meeting tonight where i learned that our 4 months
in this building may be more like 2 months.
additionally, the finance wg apparently has huge holes in their records &
ask that the collectives give an accounting of any & all payments to the
omni over the past year.
it was also suggested that we start making plans to exit the building
around the new year as our $ will likely run out by then.

Sudo,
Do you want any of the following things?
1. an awesome floor fan. The 3-speed fan motor seems to have died in its
sleep, but the sweeping/ocsillator and timers still work, as does the
remote control.
2. a small profile linux laptop. There's a short in the cable to the
display, should be an easy fix (replace that cable) or use external
monitor. Sweet little thing from zareason, currently running ubuntu,
probably 5 years old.
3. a pair of desktop Harman/Kardon speakers that just stopped working. I
suspect the plug or speaker-to-computer wiring. They kick ass when working.
This is the first of more than one notes, offering what I think has
sudo-level promise.
j.
tonight Robb and I bolted a payphone to the outside of The Omni, next to
the front door (on the right). There is no coin box or cover, and the
coin slot is filled solid with hot glue.
it's wired to a VOIP box inside with the door opener computer.
There is an asterisk server in sudoroom made entirely by Robb, which
provides telephone service to the VOIP box on the payphone, as well as two
other VOIP phones so far - one for sudoroom and one for CCL.
The "phone numbers" are
sudoroom: SUDO# (7836#)
counter culture labs: CCL# (225#)
front door: LULZ# (5859#)
the asterisk computer is running "FreePBX" and I have no idea how it
works. Robb is the expert but he is just getting started/
My vision for the system is thus:
Person picks up payphone, gets an immediate recorded message saying
"Welcome to the Omni. Please enter the extension of the collective you
are trying to reach, or 1 for a directory" and then have it give a
directory if you press 1. Then when the collective picks up the phone,
they hear that you're outside the door and they can "buzz" the door open
by pressing * or whatever on their phone. (Insert magic asterisk script
here)
Person outside presses the doorbell button:
Instead of the doorbell ringing, the button goes to a computer which then
calls the payphone, causing it to ring (yes it rings). Person who pressed
the doorbell button answers the phone, and hears the above message, since
a "doorbell" is really not appropriate for a space like the Omni.
(We can still have it be wired to the doorbell but it should do the above
and get the people to use the payphone to contact the collective they
want)
There is no limit on the number of phones we can add. We can put them all
over the Omni and probably all over the world with a tiny bit of network
routing. Also if you have nice non-cordless telephones (not rotary
though) please consider donating them to the project. Or VOIP boxes.
I don't think we should tie the system into the regular telephone system,
for several reasons. But I do think we should allow hackerspaces around
the world to tie into it and be able to call sudoroom and CCL and each
other, but we will have to see what the network traffic adds up to on our
DSL.
Please get in contact with me or Robb if you have ideas for the system or
want to help administrate it. We have no idea how to operate Asterisk or
FreePBX.
thank you
-jake
Does anyone want a functioning HP Photosmart 2575 inkjet printer + scanner?
It was in working order last we used it. Getting rid of it because I'm fed
up paying through the nose for inkjet cartridges, so we're switching to a
B/W laser printer. And who needs a scanner anymore, now that you can simply
take a high-res photo of any document with your smartphone?
Anyway - anybody want it? If not, I may just drop it off as E-waste, or
disassemble it for parts...
Patrik
