Heya, Whoever “donated” these large plasma screens, can you tell me if they are known to work? They weigh some 80 pounds and I can’t easily move them to a power outlet to test. -Cere -- *Cere Davis* Science-Art | Kinetic Sculpture CereDavis.com @ceremona <http://Twitter.com/Ceremona>

Calling all hardware startups: Sheet Acrylic Manufacturing Workshop

by Ruth Grace Wong

Exciting news: This time Mike Zhao, our contract manufacturing expert, is going to come for the Q&A in person! You can read more about him and the contract manufacturing process here: https://medium.com/supplyframe-hardware/shanghais-contract-manufacturing-a-… *Note that due to Meetup.com fees we are increasing the price to $85, but we will honor the previous price of $75 until Sunday October 7th.* ------- Are you manufacturing something with plastic? How much do you expect to pay for your molds? $10,000? Maybe even $100,000? If you are a startup and don't have the capital or the volumes to justify expensive plastic molds, manufacturing out of sheet acrylic might be the answer for you. Myself (Ruth) and Rik are running a sheet acrylic manufacturing workshop. We make the whole process accessible, from teaching joints/cutting/bending to sharing local prototyping contacts and hosting a 30 minute Q&A with a Chinese contract manufacturer. The workshop is from 9:30AM to 12:30PM on Oct 20th at the Noisebridge Hackerspace, and costs $85: http://meetu.ps/e/FRckd/qrLmq/f Feel free to contact me at ruthgracewong(a)gmail.com if you have any questions Best, Ruth

Fwd: Bioprinting at CCL tonight! 3D printing with living cells

by Patrik D'haeseleer

BioPrinting is 3D printing with living cells. Think of printing a new heart or kidney for a patient needing a transplant! Or a bit more DIY-accessible: how about printing an artificial leaf, as a proof of principle that we can make a functioning (plant) organ? As some of you know, I've been heavily involved in the BioPrinter project at Biocurious for the past several years. And I've been wanting to get a parallel group of the ground at CCL as well. I plan to give an overview of bioprinting in general, go over what we've done in the Bioprinter group away Biocurious so far, get hands-on with the current hardware (which I've absconded from BioC for the week), and discuss plans to restart a Bioprinting group at CCL. Lots of overlap with our existing lab robotics and plant bio groups as well... Hope to see you tonight! Patrik

irc exclusion

by Jake

i guess i can't participate in IRC anymore because i can't figure out how to configure SSL on irssi when i try to join sudoroom it says: 20:16 !wilhelm.freenode.net Only users using SSL could join this channel! so i googled SSL irssi and it says: https://freenode.net/kb/answer/irssi /network add -sasl_username <login> -sasl_password <password> -sasl_mechanism PLAIN freenode /server add -auto -net freenode -ssl -ssl_verify chat.freenode.net 6697 /save i'm guessing <login> and <password> are something that i have to type there but I don't know what they are or how to find them. So i can't be in IRC until i figure that out. as if IRC wasn't already exclusionary enough? -jake
