by Robert Chu

Hello Sudo Room, Adam & I worked on the back shop area, which is why the tools and material is a bit messy. There is still a bit of work to do. Please pardon the mess while it is being sorted and organized. I will be back later this afternoon to continue sorting and organizing. Thanks Rayc

Sudoroom's sponsorship of Spaz events at Omni

by Yardena Cohen

To all concerned, Spaz has been throwing a lot of parties at Omni Commons, and Sudoroom has been sponsoring them. As a member collective, our sponsorship gives them the privilege of bypassing many rules and oversight of Omni's commons working group. But at last night's Sudoroom meeting there were many concerns about continuing to sponsor these parties, especially the most recent party on Saturday night 8/31: * Loud noise after hours (11pm on friday/saturday) should be confined to the basement, but there was amplified music in the entrance hall all night. It undoubtedly disturbed our neighbors, which puts the whole building at risk. In the future someone will need to do outside sound checks with a proper sound meter througout the evening, keep logs, and be ready to share them * The relationship between SPAZ and SKAST was not clear - at first we thought SKAST was just curating an art show at a SPAZ party, but now it looks like SKAST was actually throwing the whole party, which meant the people running the party didn't have a sense of ownership or even know what the rules were. This is a bad idea and also an abuse of our sponsorship. * There was nobody clearly responsible or able to keep control of the crowd - Joe was a point person who was trying to tell people to turn down the music but everybody ignored him * There was alcohol flowing freely, but they did not have an ABC license or insurance for this. Even when the party is BYOB we are still legally responsible for the presence of alcohol. * There were probably too many people. You need to limit attendance by counting in and out guests * The party leaked into the rest of the building, and many people were going into non-party areas such as the ballroom, sudo/ccl & upstairs. This creates more risk and more mess for everybody to clean up. * People left a huge mess - even after several Omni volunteers working *ALL NIGHT* it was still not clean enough for an event the next day. The activists who got up early Sunday for a nonviolent direct action training, preparing for next week's climate strike, did not have the best experience at Omni and they should not need to deal with the consequences of someone else's drunken benders. * Communication with others at Omni has been poor. If spaz people can't make it to the Commons WG meeting, then you all need to figure out a better time to talk to each other (e.g. not 5 pm when people are just getting off work). * Omni recently forced out a member collective, in part because of similar concerns about unpermitted boozy events. If we don't hold every group to the same standards, then we are hypocrites. We love spaz, but we cannot keep sponsoring these events until everybody has met in person and resolved these issues. Thanks, Yar on behalf of Sudoroom

Sudoroom meeting soon?

by Yardena Cohen

Hey all, It's been a while since we've had a real Sudoroom meeting. There are a couple of pending Omni proposals & issues that need our attention: * Almost 6 months ago, Helen proposed a process for Omni delegates to resolve conflicts and remove members from working groups. We owe it to her to finally make a clear decision on this. * Omni's figurehead corporate entity needs 3 new officers (president, secretary, treasurer) and we need more volunteers for these roles * We need to figure out new rules for giving Omni keycards to people - I proposed letting members vouch for non-members, which doesn't seem fully workable, but the discussion must continue We could meet this week 8/21, next week 8/28, or the week after 9/4. I know more people will be in town 9/4 but the downside is that we have a delegates meeting the very next day. If anybody has blocking concerns for any of these proposals it would be rude to wait until 9/4 to voice them. Thanks, Yar

server rack UPS

by Jake

last night there was a constant beeping sound in sudoroom it was traced to a UPS in the server rack. the type of UPS was the oldest cheapest kind with no buttons or functions, it didn't even have USB or any way to notify equipment that power had failed... so I unplugged it from the wall for a second and everything went down, so i followed through and removed it from the system and plugged everything back in. After a while of still no internet, i realized that the router PC was not on because it's a dell desktop that has not been configured to turn itself on after being plugged in. I pressed the power button and everything went back to normal. Of course i'm sure that dell is "temporary" but we should probably either boot it into BIOS mode and set it to "auto power on after AC loss" or take a safety pin and short the PS_ON# green wire (possibly a different color since it's a dell) to black (ground) to force the power supply ON no matter what. oh and also a sign of some sort. to be clear: the UPS was not working and wasn't hooked up properly anyway. A UPS needs to tell the computers it's powering that the power has failed so they can safely shut down before power goes off. -jake

Re: [sudo-discuss] [omni-booking] Basement Rent

by joe liesner

We of the Booking WG are not feeling like we are getting the cooperation of SPAZ or SUDO in resolving the outstanding issues regarding SPAZ holding events in the basement. Our understanding is that if Sudo is sponsoring SPAZ events then a representative of Sudo needs to at least be present at those SPAZ events and should be involved in putting the event on, This has not been happening. In addition there is BYOB alcohol at SPAZ event without any ABC permits or any insurance; there has been OC property destruction at several events: there have not been sufficient noise reduction procedures at the last event and people in the neighboring building have been kept up at 1:30am; and the SpaZ events have left the premises strewn with beer bottles and trash without having made a cleaning deposit for their rental. In addition SPAZ has assumed the authority to extend their SUDO sponsorship to others e.g. Chai CAT and SKAT. In order to allow SKAST to take place on 8/31 booking wg must insist that there is better noise/crowd control, much better security/supervision, no alcohol, proper insurance, and trash removal guananteed by a cleaning deposit. The tone of frustration apparent in this post is not the way booking would want to communicate with our colleagues but comes with not having had a chance to work with sudo or SPAZ f2f for weeks. Hopefully with such meetings we can get clear on some of these basics and work together for the good of OC. joe, for booking wg (Robb and Roberto) > On Aug 18, 2019, at 10:07 PM, Jenny Ryan <jenny(a)jennyryan.net> wrote: > > I spent some time with Lukas today doing some more onboarding re: our booking and event processes. He's been slammed with an out-of-town work gig that he just returned from yesterday, and so should be able to attend the next Commons meeting on the 26th (I'm out of town again this weekend through Tuesday, unfortunately, but will try to participate remotely if anyone opens the pad this time!). We went through making a contract for the SKAST art show on the 31st and also discussed the 'We Are the Ones' event for Sep 7th, which wants to utilize the ballroom during the day and move to the basement for an afterparty, but is only offering $200-300. Lukas and I will run point on these (and other events of relevance to the basement/SPAZ community) together while he's getting the hang of our processes and is able to attend some of the upcoming f2f meetings. > > If I may ask, or rather urge: let's please be welcoming and encouraging of anyone aligned and eager to help us better steward events - I'll be the first to acknowledge that our processes are rather intimidating and cumbersome to even longtime community members, and I'm looking forward to not only a better booking system, but cultivating a more welcoming culture of orienting interested folks to becoming core volunteers <3 > > Re: "market rate" for the basement - I'm still somewhat confused by this request and why they're not interested in renting the ballroom instead. But anyway - I think Robb's right-on with that price point, considering the risk involved of any late-night event. It's well nigh impossible to find any venue that will go past 2am, much less one for under $100/hr. We should do some more comparative research, though. Two sites that host local rentable venue listings are https://peerspace.com <https://peerspace.com/> and https://evenues.com <https://evenues.com/> - factor in that the 1450 square footage of the basement hall is cut down by Village/CCL storage on one side and Phat Beets/soundsystem storage on the other, plus the lack of amenities we provide, and the occupancy cap of 49 people... it doesn't quite compare to, say, 1000 sqft at ground level with nice floors and empty-canvass-ness. But try and book anything shiny past 2am and we're about it. > > This request also runs into the issue of whether they want to use the SPAZ soundsystem (in which case let's have Lukas join this conversation), how much they intend things to be virtually "plug and play", etc. I would be willing to update the website next week, at the least we should say something about needing to work with SPAZ folks for basement late-night events (considering the many factors that complicate things here, not just the sound system but also security, noise, safety, lighting, etc). > > Apologies for the long email and thanks all for your continued dedication <3 > > On Sun, Aug 18, 2019 at 9:27 PM robb <sf99er(a)gmail.com <mailto:sf99er@gmail.com>> wrote: > i think for a high risk event like a rave for a political (not exempt) campaign, it should be something like $100-150/hr depending on if they use the entrance hall or not > maybe $70-100/hr for non-profits > too high? low? > > On Sun, Aug 18, 2019 at 8:30 PM joe liesner <blue393(a)lmi.net <mailto:blue393@lmi.net>> wrote: > Hi > I need to give a condidate for City Council of Oakland > a market rate quote for the Basement hall. Fwd: [omni-consensus] lease agreements proposal version 3.4

by Yardena Cohen

---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Helen Finkelstein <hefinkel(a)gmail.com> Date: Wed, Aug 28, 2019 at 8:44 PM Subject: [omni-consensus] lease agreements proposal version 3.4 To: <consensus(a)lists.omnicommons.org> A collective may find itself in financial difficulties. If a collective cannot meet its rent because of a cash-flow problem or some other glitch, it should work out the problem with the finance committee. But a deeper problem may require a collective to change the terms of its lease or fiscal sponsorship. This could be a financial problem, or it could be some other issue such as the collective's use of its space. If a collective needs to change the terms of any part of its lease it must come to the Delegates' Assembly with a proposal for new terms within one month. Even if the collective is unable to pay its rent, it retains full membership in the OMNI for three months, as long as a solution to the problem is being negotiated in good faith. The three-month clock starts ticking as soon as the collective comes to a Delegates' Assembly, or fails to meet the terms of its agreement, whichever comes first. It is the responsibility of a collective with a problem to bring it to the Delegates' Assembly. The delegates must prioritize finding a way to retain a current member collective. - Helen _______________________________________________ consensus mailing list consensus(a)lists.omnicommons.org https://omnicommons.org/lists/listinfo/consensus
