Can anyone recommend a resin that I could use to replace a glass lampshade?

by Andrew R Gross

Hey everyone! I have an ornate lamp, where the lights are all inside glass flowers, and a few of them broke. I'd like to replace them by making a silicone mold of one of the intact ones and then casting it in resin. Making the mold seems straightforward, but I've never actually cast resin before, and I'm looking for advice on what resin to use. The bulbs are halogen bulbs, so they get fairly hot, and the lamps are pretty close. I'm guessing that if the resin can withstand 200 F they should be fine. Does anyone know whether this is feasible? Can anyone recommend a resin that is clearish and can withstand moderately high heat for long periods of time? Here are some pictures. They're not great, but they give you a sense of what I'm looking to replace: https://photos.app.goo.gl/cPeqyw9ZpQfBufwi9 -Andy *Andrew R Gross, (he/him)* 412.657.5332 - shrad.org <http://www.shrad.org>

So what is everyone doing this week?

by romy＠snowyla.com

I saw Juliana build a cool twitterbot! The women's programming night looks like it's going really well. Andrew has a cool resin sculpture. Would love to see it! Me, I met some cool people at SudoRoom during hardware hack night. we chatted about Blender and I got to see some other software for light projections, but I'm moving on to a phase where I can create my own 3D models, hopefully to print them out and also animate them. I also started on doing world building in Blender using historical artifacts. There are a lot of 3D scans of historical objects that you can download for free from SketchFab https://sketchfab.com/3d-models/combination-padlock-756916ba62b7489294fc9c8… SketchFab has a post on all the open access eminent domain 3D models they have been putting up. https://sketchfab.com/blogs/community/sketchfab-launches-public-domain-dedi… I'm excited about NYC next week! I'm going to be hanging out with Mitch who's in town for the HOPE conference. For fundraising at SudoRoom - so Far I'm thinking the coworking idea, and the study space for UC Berkeley students sounds like a good run. I guess I should drop in on a meeting one of these days!

SudoRoom entry to the Downtown SF let's glow SF light projection mapping event this winter!

by Romy Ilano

https://www.downtownsf.org/events/letsglowsf-2022/ Woo hoo! OK I have been messing around with light projection mappings for a few months here so far. I got totally distracted with other stuff but now I'm back on track. There is now an open call to artists at the Downtown SF Partnership! https://www.downtownsf.org/events/letsglowsf-2022/ Submissions are due on August 20, 2022 and"Artists’ work will be shown on 1 of 4 buildings that will be projector mapped for 10 evenings from December 2nd – 12th, 2022." And when I do my submissions I will mention SudoRoom all the way - who knows, one of them might get in! Is anyone else at SudoRoom interested as well? ============================= Romy Ilano romy(a)snowyla.com

Hardware and softWEAR* Hacking Tuesday is tonight

by Jake

Hi everyone, You're getting this email either because 1) you're on the sudoroom discuss email list, or 2) because I BCC'd you directly. Tonight I'll be hosting Sudoroom for those who want to come hack on whatever in person, or through telepresence (see the last link in this email) ALSO NOW FEATURING: SoftWEAR hacking too: most Tuesday evenings the sewing area at Omni Commons (in the basement) is also active so bring your fabric and textile projects and technical repairs; we've got heavy duty and serger sewing machines available. You’re also welcome to bring your own machine to have it checked out and tuned up for tip-top operation or to just sew alongside others. Remember that Omni Commons and Sudoroom policy is presently that EVERYONE MUST WEAR A MASK AT ALL TIMES INSIDE THE BUILDING. (if you want to eat something you should go outside) in the past few weeks, we've had about 5-15 people over the course of the evening, not including remote participants who logged in through telepresence Jenny put it on the Omni calendar: https://omnicommons.org/blog/events/hardware-hack-night-3-2022-03-01/ Here it is on the sudoroom page: https://sudoroom.org/events/hardware-hack-night-2022-02-15/ that says 7PM but I try to be there earlier. if you get to the door (at the corner of 48th and shattuck) and you can't get in, call me or someone else who's there to let you in! Email me if you don't have my phone number. Actually a great way to get our attention is to join the video chat link at the end of this email! We don't always hear the doorbell and I don't answer it anyway! You should get on this sudoroom discuss mailinglist! click here: https://sudoroom.org/lists/postorius/lists/sudo-discuss.sudoroom.org/ and you should donate monthly to sudoroom, monthly, by signing up here: https://sudoroom.org/humans and if you want to make a one-time donation, you can go here: https://sudoroom.org/donate if you can't make it in person: join the jitsi videochat with the room, and chat with each other as well as a giant TV screen/speakerphone on the wall: https://meet.waag.org/turtlesturtlesturtles (don't worry if you're the only one in the "room", others will join eventually, and if the camera is pointed at the floor, just yell until someone comes and talks to you and then ask them to aim it back up into the room) see you soon! -jake

Blender is progressing nicely

by Romy Ilano

My blender tutorials are progressing nicely. It was worth it to invest the time in only doing blender tutorials - all the other activity has been a big bunch of distractions. The nice thing is that I’m also up to the point of doing video editing and animations so that’s the big block I had to jump into light projections and augmented reality 🤔 I guess tonight I’ll continue my blender tutorials and erect a “hey we’re learning blender” Project page on SudoRoom ! what are you working on?

by romy＠snowyla.com

I am working on these things! https://sudoroom.org/wiki/User:Romyilano#Bestest_Most_Current_Things Basically the projection mapping project has become my thing and it's the only thing I'm really focusing on at SudoRoom. I've learned that you do more by doing less! I've gotten off track in the past few weeks. What are you working on? Or maybe work isn't the right word... having fun and being creative with?

The New Parkway Theater

by Andrew R Gross

Do you guys all know about the new Parkway theater (www.thenewparkway.com)? I went there yesterday to see everything everywhere all at once and was absolutely blown away. The movie was mine blowing, but also the theater is like nothing I’ve ever seen before. I also noticed that they have a partnership with food not bombs, which suggests that we have some major community overlap. I wanted to make sure that everyone here knows about this place because I think everyone here would love it, and also because they seem to be executing a vision that shares similarities to Omni commons, and executing it really successfully. I’d like to know if anyone from Omni commons is in communication with whoever runs this theater. If not, we should set up a meeting asap, because if they have any advice for us it might help save the building. -- *Andrew R Gross, (he/him)* 412.657.5332 - shrad.org <http://www.shrad.org>
